About the role

The Department of Computer Science at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, jointly with the Center for Computational Mathematics (CCM) of the Simons Foundation’s Flatiron Institute, invites outstanding candidates to apply for a joint computer science faculty position in the general area of machine learning.

Responsibilities

  • Expertise in all areas of machine learning including deep learning, Bayesian statistics, probabilistic modeling, optimization, learning theory, high dimensional data analysis and visualization, computer vision, and applications of machine learning for science.
  • Teach broadly across the undergraduate computer science curriculum, including courses such as introductory programming, data structures and algorithms, and advise project courses at all levels.
  • Conduct research in a scientific area of relevance to the CCM and/or develop and implement novel algorithms and codes needed for CCM-related research.
  • Publish research in refereed scientific and technical journals and present research at scientific conferences.
  • Provide publicly available software for use by the scientific community.
  • Manage and participate in collaborative efforts within the Flatiron Institute and the Simons Foundation, as well as outside scientific collaborators.
  • Absorb and assist in the organization of CCM-related workshops, conferences and group seminars.
  • Serve as a mentor to summer students and assist in the organization of summer programs.

Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate in computer science or closely related area of computational science and engineering is required.
  • Two or more years of postgraduate research experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in software and algorithm development, computational methods, data analysis, modeling, machine learning, high-performance and parallel computing, or scientific simulation.
  • Expertise in mathematical modeling, analysis and/or scientific computation, scientific software and algorithm development, and data analysis.
  • Ability to work well in an interdisciplinary environment, and to collaborate with experimentalists.
  • Oral and written communication, data documentation, and presentation skills required.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects at the same time required.
  • Ability to present research and other types of work, internally and externally.

Compensation and Benefits

The full-time annual compensation range for this position is $115,000-$130,000. In addition to competitive salaries, the Simons Foundation provides employees with an outstanding benefits package.
