Associate Project Engineer (Provisional)

This position supports New York State Canal System capital improvement projects, focusing on waterways infrastructure such as dams, embankments, flow conveyance structures, and other canal assets.

About the role

Organizes project teams, assigns responsibilities, develops schedules, and determines resource requirements. Monitors and reports on project status, including cost, timing, and staffing. Ensures adherence to internal and external quality standards. Provides technical guidance on scope changes and other project aspects. Manages engineering projects under supervision, overseeing safety, quality, scope, schedule, and budget.

The duration of this provisional position is not to exceed three years but may change based on performance and business needs.

Responsibilities

• Manage all stages of the project lifecycle from initiation through closeout, ensuring deliverables comply with schedule.
• Own small to medium-sized projects under general supervision, with some guidance from higher-level engineers or managers.
• Manage and implement multiple projects concurrently.
• Coordinate with in-house and external resources for all project activities.
• Ensure licensing, environmental, permitting, safety, and code compliance are incorporated into projects, especially during initiation and design phases.
• Develop and manage design documents, project presentations, budgets, forecasts, bid documents, and award recommendations with guidance.
• Partner with construction engineers and stakeholders to negotiate contract change orders, prepare invoices, and coordinate construction sequencing and site outages.
• Review and contribute to project documentation, including drawings, technical specifications, assessment reports, asset and risk registries, budgets, schedules, and variances.
• Perform occasional emergency response, including outside of normal business hours.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in Project or Construction Management, preferably in utility, commercial, or related mechanical/electrical industries.
• New York State Engineer in Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain one within 2 years (preferred).

Skills

• Basic competency in project management of electrical, mechanical, structural, or water projects specific to utilities, canal/waterways, building systems, distributed energy resources, or electric vehicles.
• Collaborative and team-oriented with the ability to build relationships with vendors and stakeholders.
• Ability to develop project plans, timelines, and work schedules, and coordinate among customers, contractors, and permitting agencies.
• Familiarity with applicable codes, standards, regulations, project budgets, costs, project management software, and NYPA external stakeholders.
• Ability to perform basic engineering calculations and adapt standard specifications, scopes of work, reports, and design packages.

Physical Requirements

• Approximately 25% travel, primarily within New York State.
• Willingness to enter confined spaces and climb/scale power system apparatuses.
• Ability to travel to vendor facilities worldwide to support construction activities, equipment fabrication, and commissioning.
• Availability to work outside of normal business hours (including weekends) when project demands.

Pay

The estimated salary range for this position is $80,000 - $110,000. The offered salary will be determined based on the candidate’s relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
