About the Role

The Associate Nurse Manager reports directly to the Nurse Manager and oversees daily operations of an assigned shift, ensuring proper care is provided to all patients. This role is accountable for high-quality, safe, and appropriate nursing care; competency of clinical and support staff; and resource and service management related to patient care. The Associate Nurse Manager ensures services and care comply with organizational policies and procedures, demonstrates fiscal responsibility, and assists the Nurse Manager with strategic unit operations, staff meetings, and other responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Support the mission, vision, values, and strategic initiatives of Jackson Health System.
  • Improve employee engagement through collaboration, accountability, and recognition; lead structured huddles and resolve staff issues in partnership with unions.
  • Provide mentoring and contribute to staff retention and succession planning.
  • Use and role model the nursing process to deliver, modify, and coordinate high-standard care and patient/family education.
  • Anticipate, identify, prioritize, and report patient findings and inconsistencies in medical plans.
  • Conduct patient rounds, monitor bedside handoffs, and ensure responsiveness to call lights.
  • Facilitate staff education, including clinical competencies, orientation, and mentoring.
  • Oversee daily unit operations and assume 24/7 responsibility in the absence of the Nurse Manager.
  • Assist with staffing requirements, nursing care, and documentation; report issues or changes in patient acuity.
  • Collaborate with leadership to formulate and implement short- and long-term goals aligned with organizational priorities, including timely patient discharges.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with providers and act as a resource for staff and healthcare team members.
  • Identify, develop, and retain high-potential employees through engagement and educational programs.
  • Evaluate direct reports’ performance, focusing on results and developmental needs.
  • Recruit and orient new employees, overseeing unit-based orientation.
  • Promote the organization’s mission, vision, philosophy, code of ethics, and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Expertise).
  • Analyze healthcare trends and suggest improvements in patient care standards.
  • Support quality and performance metrics, including core measures, hospital-acquired infections, safety initiatives, and patient experience.
  • Conduct daily patient rounds to ensure compliance with nursing practice standards, including handwashing and patient satisfaction.
  • Participate in budgetary planning, monitor monthly budgets, and develop cost management strategies.
  • Complete monthly schedules to ensure adequate staffing based on patient acuity and workforce targets.
  • Review and approve timecards; manage staffing on a regular basis.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory and JHS policies and procedures.
  • Prepare and maintain the unit for regulatory agency requirements.
  • Follow unit-specific policies and procedures and utilize job-specific equipment.
  • Role model behaviors of service excellence and CARE values.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (required).
  • Valid Florida RN license (required).
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with at least 6 months validity (required).
  • Additional applicable life support certifications for Healthcare Providers may be required at the unit level.
  • Must meet and maintain all unit-specific and organizational skills, competencies, certifications, and licensures as required by regulatory and nursing standards.
  • 3–5 years of related experience; management experience strongly preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Physical Requirements:
    • Frequent sitting, standing, or walking for extended periods.
    • Ability to carry objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
    • Frequent visual acuity for extended computer use.
  • Environmental Conditions:
    • Fast-paced environment with occasional high-pressure or emergent situations.
    • Frequent interaction with a diverse population, including team members, providers, patients, and the public.
    • Subject to inside environmental conditions, with occasional outdoor exposures.
    • Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, and other hospital/medical office conditions.
    • Potential exposure to needle sticks, airborne infections, medical gases, X-rays, and chemical hazards.
    • Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in infectious/clinical environments.
