Associate Medical Director (Part Time)

Our residential treatment services are designed to serve individuals and families with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders, helping clients address addiction, increase skills, manage stressors, connect to supportive services, and build a foundation for lasting recovery.
The 24/7/365 residential substance use disorder (SUD) treatment program provides 3.1, 3.3, and 3.5 ASAM levels of care for males and females, as well as 3.2 withdrawal management. There are 15 beds allocated for 3.1/3.5, 15 beds for 3.3, and 12 beds for 3.2, totaling 42 beds. Be Well is located on the Be Well Orange County campus, uniting public, private, academic, and faith-based organizations to facilitate communication, bridge gaps, and eliminate barriers to care.
About the role
The part-time (20 hours a week) Associate Medical Director is primarily responsible for the oversight and delivery of care through monitoring clinical skills of providers, ensuring patient access to care, participating in performance improvement, assisting in policy development, and orienting new providers. This role is a member of the program leadership team, fostering teamwork, collaboration, and integration of all service areas.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and deliver care for patients with substance use disorders and co-occurring psychiatric conditions, including withdrawal management.
- Create, contribute to, and implement policies pertaining to behavioral and medical care in conjunction with program leadership.
- Collaborate with the Nurse Manager, program leadership, regional leadership, and Medical Director to ensure quality, efficient patient care.
- Provide full supervision, clinical oversight, and performance management for Advanced Practice Providers, including entering into Collaborative Agreements, conducting clinical reviews, and participating in hiring and termination decisions.
- Supervise and oversee the quality of care among providers and ancillary staff, including being available for consultations.
- Conduct regular supervision meetings with medical providers, review charts, and sign forms requiring physician approval.
- Strategize resource allocation to support expanded services and ensure appropriate care delivery across all levels, from withdrawal management to outpatient services.
- Foster integration of services and champion Quality Improvement efforts.
- Monitor and support provider productivity targets to ensure patient access to care.
- Work with the Nurse Manager and Medical Director to ensure adequate productivity of nursing staff and providers.
- Actively participate in the program leadership team, fostering collaboration and integration among service areas.
- Review employee performance, provide feedback, and conduct annual performance appraisals for medical providers and staff.
- Orient new physicians and advanced practice providers, monitoring performance through peer review, chart audits, and utilization review.
- Respond to patient requests for information and assistance in a timely manner.
- Provide on-call after-hours availability as requested by the Medical Director and work evenings/weekends as required.
- Work directly with the Nurse Manager to provide competent care and oversight of nursing staff.
- Provide withdrawal management services, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), and behavioral/incidental medical services in residential and intensive outpatient settings.
- Attend and participate in Integrated Team Meetings and support clinical performance improvement initiatives.
- Precept medical students, residents, and fellows, and supervise volunteers as necessary.
- Participate in Peer Reviews to improve clinical service quality and provide clinical leadership in collaboration with divisional and managing directors.
- Monitor program performance and work to improve quality and efficiency of care.
- Provide training and consultation to treatment staff and attend required meetings.
- Supervise nurse practitioners, licensed vocational nurses, and licensed psychiatric technicians.
- Manage performance improvement plans, formal warnings, and terminations for direct reports in consultation with leadership.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, 42 CFR regulations, and all funding mandates and licensing requirements.
- Develop protocols and collaborate with the Quality Assurance team to create policies for medication-assisted treatment.
- Train staff on clinical topics related to medication services and ensure compliance with HIPAA and other regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with participants and resources to develop and maintain treatment plans, transition plans, and progress notes.
- Maintain documentation in compliance with agency, HIPAA, 42 CFR, and funder standards.
- Complete admission, discharge, and assessment paperwork in a timely manner, ensuring continuity of documentation.
Requirements
- A valid and unrestricted California Physician’s License (MD or DO) with a specialty in psychiatry and/or addiction medicine.
- Sub-specialty in Addiction Medicine or significant clinical experience in Addiction Medicine.
- Valid DEA certificate, X-waiver, and 275 cap.
- Knowledge of third-party payer requirements, California practice guidelines, malpractice laws, Title 22, Bureau of Primary Care, state funding sources, and 42 CFR/HIPAA.
- Maintain required CME and professional requirements.
- Minimum 5 years post-licensure experience in direct participant care, ideally in intensive psychiatric and substance use treatment settings.
- Board Certification in Addiction Medicine (desired).
- Experience serving adults with chronic medical conditions and co-occurring severe mental illness and substance use challenges.
- Must complete background check and livescan clearance.
