About the role

Tesla Midwest Automation is a fast-paced, cutting-edge engineering group focused on automating the production of Tesla's latest advanced products. We push the limits of physics in the machines we create, and we're seeking individuals who thrive on turning bold ideas into reality.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize, design, and detail mechanical components and assemblies using SolidWorks for automation cells, robotic end effectors
  • Perform Tolerance analysis, FEA simulations, and material selection to ensure robustness under real-world dynamic conditions
  • Collaborate closely with electrical and controls engineers to size and select actuators, sensors, and vision systems
  • Build and test prototypes in our in-house engineering lab, creating proof-of-concept test systems
  • Contribute fresh ideas in concept reviews and brainstorming sessions for new projects
  • Work with the machine shop to create and release your creations for fabrication
  • Participate in assembly and debug of systems on our production floor, learning firsthand about good machine design
  • Travel with the machine to various Giga factories across the US for installations and upgrades

Requirements

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to conceptualize and create mechanical designs from concepts
  • Proficiency in using SolidWorks for mechanical design
  • Hands-on experience with prototyping (3D printing, machining, hobby projects)
  • Humility and decisiveness: willing to ask questions and make decisions even when not fully informed
  • New Grad to 4 years of experience in mechanical design
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience

Qualifications

  • Experience with SolidWorks for mechanical design
  • Hands-on experience with prototyping tools (3D printing, machining)
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Skills

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks
  • Experience with FEA and tolerance analysis
  • Knowledge of materials science and mechanical engineering principles
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
