Associate Materials Scientist
About the role
The Applied Materials Division (AMD) at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking an Associate Materials Scientist – Carbon Beneficiation and Separation. This position reports to the Resource Recovery and Separations Department and focuses on securing a domestic supply chain for critical materials, particularly graphite. The candidate will work on developing and testing material beneficiation, leaching, and separation unit operations.
Responsibilities
- Develop and test new beneficiation, leaching, and separation technologies
- Lead or assist in the design and implementation of pilot plants
- Characterize and purify carbon from legacy mine waste or coal byproducts
- Investigate opportunities to create value-added products from the purification process
Requirements
- PhD in geology, earth sciences, chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials engineering
- Experience with processing, leaching, separating, and characterizing different forms of carbon
- Proven track record in carrying out independent and collaborative research
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Self-motivated with creative and proactive approaches to scientific problem-solving
- Experience in plant design, equipment installation, modification, and maintenance
- Willingness to enforce and adhere to safety rules
- Ability to work with large volumes of hazardous chemicals
- Flexibility to manage multiple projects simultaneously

Pay and Schedule
The expected hiring range for this position is $94,486.00 - $147,398.94. Please note that the pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
Schedule
The position requires an on-site presence at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois, five days per week.
