Associate Instructor of Machine Tool Technology

Tennessee College of Applied Technology Knoxville is seeking a full-time Associate Instructor of Machine Tool Technology to join the faculty at the Ruth & Steve West Workforce Development Center. This role focuses on providing quality instruction in machine tool technology, guiding students through conventional and computer numerically controlled (CNC) machining skills, and maintaining a positive learning environment.

About the role

Reporting to the Vice President of Instruction, you will help maintain program quality and accreditation standards while supporting student completion and job placement. This full-time faculty position follows a schedule of 7.5 hours per day, 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m., with a 30-minute lunch break.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate the classroom instructional process for post-secondary, secondary, and special industry students.
• Evaluate and monitor student progress, assign grades, and provide academic assistance to students.
• Maintain attendance and grade records, and counsel and advise students on career goals.
• Work to retain students and maintain required classroom and office hours.
• Maintain appropriate records and submit timely reports.
• Select texts, equipment, supplies, and other learning resources.
• Participate in the purchase of needed program supplies and equipment.
• Develop instructional materials, and create and revise courses and/or curricula as needed.
• Maintain updated course syllabi.
• Remain current within the instructional field and technologies.
• Acquire, maintain, and apply knowledge of current instructional methodologies and materials.
• Attend scheduled college and division professional development and in-service activities, and support related professional organizations.
• Participate in the annual faculty evaluation process.
• Comply with FERPA laws.
• Participate in advising, recruitment, admissions, and orientation of potential students.
• Assist students with job placement.
• Support student activities, including SkillsUSA, NTHS, graduation, and other events.
• Assist in the recruitment and selection of college personnel as assigned.
• Participate in accreditation, assessment, and performance funding processes.
• Support and participate in the College's decision-making processes, and provide input and assistance with budgets.
• Attend convocation and commencement exercises, and participate in mandatory college programs.
• Develop and maintain positive and cooperative relationships with colleagues.
• Develop industry partnerships and maintain an active program advisory committee.
• Work to meet and exceed COE benchmarks for student completion and placement, as well as accreditation standards.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and/or administration, on and off campus.

Requirements

• Minimum of an Associate degree or equivalent post-secondary diploma from an accredited technical training program in a related field.
• Three years of full-time, related work experience as a machinist within the last five years.
• Knowledge of and the ability to operate conventional machinist and computer numerically controlled (CNC) equipment.
• Commitment to remain current in the machinist field and maintain program accrediting status.

Preferred Qualifications

• NIMS and/or industry certification.
• Teaching experience.
• Knowledge of Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) policies and procedures.
• Skill in managing deadlines and working in a team-oriented environment.

Skills

• Organizational and communication skills necessary to be an effective teacher.
• Computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications, email, and other technology tools.
• Willingness to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, and business/industry personnel.
• Commitment to remaining current with industry practices through professional development activities.

Physical Demands / Working Conditions

The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

• Environment: Work is performed primarily in a classroom and machine shop setting, with exposure to noise, machine tool equipment, and materials common to a machining lab, along with extended periods standing and demonstrating equipment.
• Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a classroom and shop setting; to stand or walk for prolonged periods; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 25 pounds; to operate machine tool, CNC, and office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination, including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Pay

Salary is in accordance with Tennessee Board of Regents guidelines and commensurate with education and experience, within the range of $52,500 – $63,000. Applicants may be considered for hire at the Instructor rank if they meet the qualifying criteria, including three years of full-time higher education teaching experience in the occupational discipline, and required work experience and education. Final rank placement will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications at the time of hire.
