Associate General Counsel (17747)
Florida A&M University's Division of Legal Affairs is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Associate General Counsel.
Responsibilities
- Represent the Florida A&M University (University) Board of Trustees (FAMU BOT) in all legal proceedings in State and Federal Courts, and various administrative agencies of Federal and State Government.
- Prepare all pleadings associated with Federal and State court litigation and other proceedings before courts or agencies.
- Prepare and/or review legal documents or instruments, such as contracts, leases, bid specifications, letters of agreement, in all areas of FAMU BOT and University operations, including academic program administration, administrative affairs, student affairs, and University direct support organizations.
- Interpret State and Federal laws, rules, and regulations; and the rules and regulations of the Board of Governors and FAMU BOT, advising key University officials on their application.
- Provide legal advice and services on a wide variety of legal matters with a primary emphasis on:
- Real estate transactions (purchases, sales, leasing, etc.) and development.
- Design and construct contracts, permitting, easements, bond, and other financing.
- Regulatory and contractual compliance.
- Preparation and review of procurement, auxiliaries, charitable agreements, vendor, and miscellaneous contracts.
- Legal documents related to real estate, procurement, auxiliaries, third-party management contracts, and financing portfolio.
- Provide legal services on asset acquisitions, structuring exempt and taxable entities, their affiliations and mergers, and related transactional matters.
- Handle matters related to University direct support/affiliated organizations.
- Develop policy, regulation, and rules related to procurement and real estate transactions.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the President and/or Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel.
Requirements
- Juris Doctorate and two years of experience as an attorney.
- Must be a member of the Florida Bar or become a member within a year.
Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Westlaw or Lexis Legal Research Database, legal research, and writing.
- Understanding of challenges and opportunities within a University environment, exercising independent and prudent judgment to protect University interests.
- Ability to function calmly and effectively during crises and stressful situations.
- Client development skills.
- Ability to work independently and productively as part of a legal and administrative team.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least ten (10) years of experience as a practicing attorney.
- Demonstrated ability to handle litigation matters.
This is an Administrative and Professional (A&P) position. Successful candidates are subject to pre-employment screening, including a review of criminal records, reference checks, and verification of education.
