About the role

The Bureau of Fire Prevention cultivates a safer city for its citizens, visitors and first responders by preventing loss of life and property damage from fire and other emergencies. The Bureau consists of Fire Protection Inspectors, lawyers, engineers, explosives experts, and Fire Officers who work together to save lives in New York City.

Responsibilities

  • Review inspection reports from Field Inspectors to determine accuracy, legibility, and completeness of inspections.
  • Conduct expedited complex inspections when necessary.
  • Verify that all inspections are conducted as listed on daily projection sheets and that times listed on time sheets correspond with times listed in inspection orders.
  • Perform audit inspections and notify Inspectors of deficiencies as noted by reports and field visits.
  • Supervise subordinate personnel and all office operations as needed.
  • Disseminate technical information to staff.
  • Conduct education drills for Field Inspectors.
  • Provide Fire Code information to the public, upon request.
  • Make recommendations on highly technical inspection policies and the issuance of permits.
  • Create reports and recommendations to Chiefs and Deputy Chief Inspectors on inspection matters.
  • Perform duties of immediate supervisor in their absence and any other related duties assigned.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years of full-time experience in or more of the following: the manufacture or storage of explosives or flammables; the development of safety standards for the manufacture or storage of such materials; the inspection of premises where such materials are manufactured, stored or houses to detect potential fire and explosion hazards; the design, installation, operation, repair and testing of sprinkler systems, standpipes, or other fire detection or fire extinguishing systems; or Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above.
  • Education from an accredited college or technical institution with specialization in fire science technology, chemistry, physics or engineering may be substituted for the experience requirement on the basis of one year of education (30 credits) for one year of experience, up to a maximum of 4 years.
  • A Motor Vehicle Driver's License valid in the State of New York.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of District Office Procedures, Fire Code, Rules Of the City of New York, applicable sections of the NYC Building Code, Multiple Dwelling Code, NYS Labor Law, and Board of Standards and Appeals.
  • Previous inspection experience in the District Office and knowledge of FDNY Summons, Criminal Summonses, Violation Orders, and District Office inspection forms.
  • Excellent analytical, research, written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Knowledge of inspectional software and Microsoft applications.
  • Prior experience in training and/or mentoring.

Qualifications

  • Display conduct and dresses in a manner that brings credit to the FDNY.
  • Demonstrate cooperation with supervisors, peers, and subordinates.
  • Promptly reports all corruption matters to the appropriate authority.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of Administrative Codes and various laws.

Skills

  • Knowledge of inspectional software and Microsoft applications.
  • Prior experience in training and/or mentoring.
