ASSOCIATE ENGINEER (COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT)

About the role

The City of Torrance is seeking an Associate Engineer to join the Community Development Team. The position is located within the Engineering Division, which supports the Community Development Department in overseeing and initiating plans for economic growth, commercial, industrial, and residential development and re-development, zoning, code enforcement, permitting, and building inspections.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with different City departments including Public Works, Transit, and Community Services; as well as the Current Development, Planning, and Building divisions of Community Development.
• Manage non-capital improvement private development engineering projects.
• Prepare and present reports and agenda items for the City Council and City commissions.
• Prepare and administer professional engineering and professional service contracts.
• Plan and direct the work of lower-level professional and technical engineering staff.
• Perform related duties as required.

Qualifications

Successful candidates will possess and maintain an appropriate, valid California driver's license. A valid certificate of registration issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers is desirable. Ideal candidates will have:

• Extensive experience in reviewing private development plans;
• Experience or training in engineering computer applications;
• Sound judgment and decision-making abilities;
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills;
• Ability to represent the City in meetings and presentations;
• Initiative and proactive problem-solving skills;
• A natural aptitude for teamwork.
