Associate Editor, News Writer

About the role

At Outside, we are seeking a News Writer to support our mission of inspiring, informing, and engaging outdoor enthusiasts. The ideal candidate will have a passion for the outdoors, writing, and digital publishing, and will be ready to contribute to shaping the outdoor culture.

Responsibilities

• Write 3 news stories per week, combining both aggregated and original reporting.
• Attend 3 News meetings per week to actively pitch stories and engage with trends in the outdoor industry.
• Write 5+ news stories per week, including a mix of aggregated and original reporting.
• Film on-site videos to accompany written content and collaborate with the Video team.
• Copyedit and fact-check content to ensure high standards of accuracy and clarity.
• Edit and proofread content from Outside contributors and staff members.
• Contribute to content planning, audience growth, and brand development discussions within the News space.

Requirements

• Strong journalistic instincts and solid reporting skills.
• A deep interest in the outdoor lifestyle, including hiking, camping, gear, environmental issues, travel, fitness, or adventure sports.
• Ability to self-edit writing for content value, structure, and style; strong copyediting and fact-checking skills.
• Familiarity with WordPress or similar CMS.
• Working knowledge of SEO and social media principles and best practices.
• Strong writing and communication skills.
• Passion for inspiring people to explore the outdoors and protect the places we play.

Qualifications

• Preferred qualifications include a degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.
• Experience in digital publishing and news writing is preferred.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Skills

• Proficiency in SEO and social media best practices.
• Excellent writing and communication skills.
• Ability to self-edit and fact-check content.
• Experience with video production and editing.
