Associate Director, Substation Renewables
Ulteig is seeking an Associate Director to lead technical engineering managers and teams in our Renewables, Substation Department. This role focuses on supporting utility-scale solar, wind, and battery energy storage projects while driving revenue growth through business development initiatives. The position balances project leadership, people leadership, and business development influence.
About the Role
In this role, you will lead managers and multidisciplinary teams (Electrical, Civil, and Mechanical Engineers, Designers, and Technicians) to strengthen department capability, ensure strong project execution, and grow Ulteig’s Renewables business. The position involves partnering across project delivery, business development, and operations to build team capability and support client success.
Responsibilities
- Project Responsibilities – 10%
- Manage and lead all engineering activities during proposal, design, quality control, and construction stages of assigned projects.
- Serve as project sponsor, Project Technical Lead (PTL), or advisor, depending on project needs.
- Provide management and leadership for subconsultants.
- Oversee project scope, change management, and scheduling to meet contractual obligations.
- Direct and coordinate activities of multiple disciplines on large or complex projects.
- Maintain high-quality standards to meet internal and external client requirements.
- Management Responsibilities – 50%
- Maintain and grow a positive team culture while providing strategic direction and technical oversight.
- Oversee and approve team budgets, including revenue, profitability, and indirect expenses (e.g., training, rewards, team events).
- Coach, train, and develop management staff for growth opportunities.
- Conduct regular management meetings, one-on-one discussions, career development talks, and talent assessments.
- Lead workforce planning, cross-team resourcing, performance reviews, merit/bonus decisions, and professional development.
- Support company-wide hiring, including resume evaluation, technical screens, and interviews.
- Develop and implement departmental continuous improvement and strategic initiatives.
- Business Development Responsibilities – 40%
- Partner with Business Development and organizational leaders to execute territory sales plans and expand client services.
- Shape proposal strategy, coordinate resources, and review proposals and contracts (e.g., MSAs, NDAs).
- Build and sustain trusted client relationships to drive repeat work and long-term growth.
- Represent the Renewables Civil Department in client and market conversations to showcase technical leadership and delivery confidence.
Requirements
- Prior management experience with demonstrated ability to lead managers, develop people, and build accountable teams.
- Prior renewable design experience.
- Strong business acumen and industry knowledge.
- Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Authorization to work permanently in the United States.
Qualifications
- Preferred:
- PE Registration.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (or equivalent experience).
- 15+ years of experience in consulting engineering or a related infrastructure-focused environment.
- Experience supporting utility-scale renewable energy projects.
- Sound judgment, collaborative leadership style, and ability to remain effective in high-pressure situations.

- Ability to build effective relationships with employees, clients, partners, and stakeholders.
- Initiative, responsiveness, and ability to manage multiple priorities while setting clear expectations.

Pay
Target base compensation range for this role is $160,200 - $216,600. Factors influencing actual salary include job-specific skills, education, training, job location, years of experience, and comparison to existing employees in the role.
