About the role
We are looking for an Associate Director, HR Business Partner (HRBP) as a key leader within the Global Commercial Human Resources team based in San Diego, CA. Our HR team is highly collaborative, creative, and passionate about the work we do to further our mission through our people practices. You will partner with your client leadership to provide world-class human capital strategies, processes, and solutions and support the organization in developing, retaining, and hiring the best talent in the industry to further define the next era of genomics. You will focus on fostering an environment where all employees can contribute deeply to our mission to improve human health and where they can feel a sense of belonging and community.
This position reports to the Senior Director, HRBP for the global Commercial function and will serve as the HR Business Partner for senior global Commercial leaders. This is a full-time role, Monday through Friday, with an expectation of 3 in-office days per week and additional on-site presence as needed. The individual must reside in the San Diego area and be able to commute to our corporate offices.
Responsibilities
- Develop client-based human workforce capital solutions in partnership with designated Global Commercial Senior Leaders, including design and execution of innovative programs and solutions. Share best practices and learnings to impact the broader HRBP function.
- Lead initiatives with impact across client organizations and take a leadership or support role in cross-functional project teams.
- Work independently with COE partners (Talent Management, Compensation and Benefits, Talent Acquisition, People Support & Care, Employee Communications) to collaborate with business leaders and define organizational and people strategies that support Illumina’s goals.
- Serve as part of each VP leadership team, attending weekly staff meetings, and providing real-time HR guidance to determine approaches to new assignments and projects.
- Ensure effective leadership teams and succession pipelines through leadership development, hiring, and coaching.
- Lead core HR programs for the business including talent reviews, succession planning, annual performance management cycle, compensation planning (merit and equity cycles), etc.
- Build strong consultative relationships with senior executives and business leaders, acting as a strategic HR partner in shaping business strategies on employee engagement and retention.
- Provide advice and guidance on all aspects of performance management, including employee coaching, performance improvement, discipline conversations, investigations of complex employee relations issues, terminations, and reductions in force.
- Lead specific project work as determined by business priority and HR initiatives to drive results.
- Participate in and facilitate online or in-person courses.
- Collaborate across site and regional HR teams to coordinate and integrate initiatives across geographies, including Singapore and Cambridge, UK sites.
- Participate in cross-functional work groups to gain and offer HR insight on business and operational challenges.
- May participate in the development and administration of HR policies & procedures.
- Conduct exit interviews and perform ongoing qualitative data analysis of key people and performance metrics (e.g., turnover).
- Able to deputize locally (in San Diego) for the Global Commercial HRBP.
Requirements
- Minimum of 15 years of HR partnering and other relevant HR COE experience (such as employee relations, talent management) with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years with a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years of experience; or equivalent experience.
- Prior experience supporting Commercial functions.
- Life sciences business experience preferred.
- Proven consultation, communication, and influencing skills with a demonstrated capacity to effectively and practically communicate human capital practices in a complex, fast-moving, global environment.
- Demonstrated ability to balance advocacy for company initiatives, policies, and practices with employee advocacy.
- Ability to understand business imperatives and translate them into HR initiatives.
- Intellectual curiosity and the ability to learn the business and understand what drives business results and outcomes.
- Ability to effectively interact and communicate with multiple levels and disciplines across HR.
- Experience with employment and workplace safety laws and compliance requirements.
- Experience with implementation of Inclusion and Belonging initiatives preferred.

Pay
The estimated base salary range for the Associate Director, HRBP - Commercial (San Diego / Hybrid) role based in the United States of America is: $155,600 - $233,400. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. The range reflects long-term growth in the role; most candidates are hired between the minimum and middle of the range. Placement depends on experience, skills, location, and internal equity. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
