Associate Director, Email Marketing & Digital Communications (Office of Development)
About the role
The Associate Director, Email Marketing & Digital Communications is a key contributor to the Mount Sinai Office of Development’s donor engagement and fundraising communications strategy. Reporting to the Executive Director of Communications and working closely with the Senior Director of Annual Programs and the Director of Communications, this role will help build and operationalize a best-in-class email program as we transition from a legacy email platform to Salesforce Marketing Cloud.
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end planning, build, QA, deployment, and optimization of fundraising and donor engagement email communications, including campaigns, newsletters, and automated/triggered sends.
- Partner with fundraising and engagement communications colleagues to define the Office of Development’s email strategy and operating model, including intake, calendaring, creative workflows, QA, approvals, and post-send reporting.
- Enact the direct response marketing strategies under Senior Director of Annual Programs, working closely together to design, build, and optimize journeys and automations (e.g., Page 2 of 4 welcome, stewardship, event, solicitation, and upgrade paths) that support donor engagement over time across multiple audiences and segments.
- Serve as a core contributor to the phased Marketing Cloud implementation and migration from the legacy system, collaborating closely with implementation partners, internal technical teams, and stakeholders to establish scalable data and campaign foundations.
- Contribute to the development of donor-facing digital engagement packages beyond email (e.g., microsites, curated content hubs, targeted digital newsletters, and cohort- or individual-specific communications) in partnership with communications colleagues and vendors.
- Assist key stakeholders in Alumni Relations and Planned Giving to engage their audiences with timed email communications and newsletters.
- Partner with the Special Events team on comprehensive email communications for an annual calendar of private and public fundraising and donor events.
- Regularly assess, optimize, and pilot new approaches for annual appeals and broad-based campaigns under strategic guidance of the Senior Director of Annual Programs and trusted vendor.
- Establish and manage testing and measurement plans (A/B and multivariate where appropriate), including subject lines, creative, send time, content modules, and journey decisioning.
- Analyze email campaign and journey performance, report on KPIs, and translate findings into actionable recommendations to increase ROI.
- Maintain clear documentation of operational processes, templates, QA checklists, and reporting cadences to ensure continuity, scalability, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- 5+ years of progressive experience in marketing, communications, digital engagement, or related roles, with significant hands-on email marketing experience.
- Minimum Certification Requirements: Salesforce Marketing Cloud certifications (e.g., Marketing Cloud Email Specialist) a plus.
- Minimum Computer Skills: MS Office Suite, Salesforce Marketing Cloud (preferred), including Email Studio and Journey Builder, and reporting dashboards; familiarity with dynamic content and personalization techniques. Working knowledge of HTML/CSS for email; familiarity with email QA/testing and accessibility best practices. Comfort with analytics and reporting tools (e.g., Google Analytics, Tableau, Power BI) and project/workflow tools (e.g., Monday.com).
- General Skills: Ability to function independently and as a self-starter; comfortable operating with autonomy while building new processes and ways of working. Strong project management skills; ability to manage multiple priorities, timelines, and stakeholders in a fast-paced environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex concepts for technical and non-technical audiences. Strong attention to detail and commitment to QA; able to ensure high standards across creative, links, data, and compliance. Analytical, test-and-learn mindset with comfort using data to make decisions and drive optimization. Collaborative approach and ability to cultivate positive working relationships across teams and with external partners. Sound judgment and discretion when working with sensitive information and donor-facing communications.
Pay
$79720 - $161199 Annually
Schedule
Hybrid work model, with on-site expectations established in alignment with departmental priorities and evolving organizational guidelines. Employees must reside within a commutable distance of the 42nd Street Midtown NYC office. The role may also require occasional evening or weekend hours.
