This role leads the company’s Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) efforts within the Devens Facility to drive long-term company and stakeholder value. The Associate Director will develop, plan, organize, and execute EHS programs, policies, procedures, and training to maintain a safe, healthy, and environmentally compliant facility. This position promotes a compliant, forward-leaning culture and preserves BMS’ reputation while aligning corporate and local policies to foster a proactive, integrated EHS culture.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, safety, medical surveillance, and sustainability laws, regulations, codes, rules, and consensus guides.
  • Develops and implements new EHS programs, policies, and procedures, and updates existing ones.
  • Provides regulatory and technical guidance as the subject matter expert for various EHS programs, executing policies, procedures, and training.
  • Communicates strategic and business objectives for EHS, balancing business risk, customer expectations, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assures safety incidents are reported, escalated, and investigated to develop solutions that minimize or prevent recurrence.
  • Manages the Corporate EHS self-assessment program, identifies gaps, and coordinates timely closure of corrective and preventative actions (CAPAs).
  • Executes the Management of Change (MOC) program for EHS, including EHS Impact Assessments and Change Requests.
  • Participates in EHS operational and tier discussions, committees, inspections, GEMBAs, and audits.
  • Reviews and ensures accurate resolution of issues, escalating concerns or resource constraints with urgency.
  • Stops operations that could harm the environment, workforce, or facilities.
  • Utilizes site platforms for investigations, reporting, inspections, and other management system outcomes.
  • Demonstrates leadership in an EHS culture that partners with operational teams to ensure accountability for EHS performance.
  • Proactively collaborates at both site and above-site levels.
  • Conducts Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) reviews against BMS standards and compliance requirements, identifying and addressing gaps systematically.
  • Brings new approaches to improve workflows and processes, applying new concepts.
  • Coaches and mentors EHS team members during day-to-day operations.
  • Investigates causes of industrial events and injuries to develop systemic solutions.
  • Participates actively in site Leadership Teams as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in science or engineering.
  • Master’s or Graduate degree in a relevant discipline is desired.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a manufacturing Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) role.
  • Previous experience in the chemical or pharmaceutical industry is preferred.
  • Professional license or certification in an appropriate discipline is desired.
  • Experience managing people.
  • Six Sigma Certification (Green Belt or above) is desired.
  • Ability to influence and drive a sustainable EHS culture.
  • Highly skilled in Microsoft Office Suite and EHS systems like Intellex (or similar).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple high-priority items simultaneously, think creatively, critically, and strategically to solve problems in a complex environment.
  • Proclivity for partnership and cross-team collaboration.
  • Advanced knowledge of cGMP regulations and their application to EHS requirements.
  • Clean room or aseptic manufacturing experience is preferred.

Pay

Devens, MA, US: $179,220 - $217,176 (starting compensation range for a full-time employee). Additional incentive cash and stock opportunities may be available based on eligibility. The starting pay rate accounts for required skills, job location, work schedule, job-related knowledge, and experience. Final compensation will be determined based on demonstrated experience.

Schedule

This role follows BMS’s occupancy structure, which determines where work is conducted based on job responsibilities:

  • Site-essential roles: Require 100% of shifts onsite at the assigned facility.
  • Site-by-design roles: May be eligible for a hybrid work model with at least 50% onsite at the assigned facility. Onsite presence is critical for collaboration, innovation, productivity, and culture.
  • Field-based and remote-by-design roles: Require physical travel to visit customers, patients, or business partners and attend meetings as directed.
