Associate Civil Engineer (Geotechnical Engineering)

About the role

The East Bay Municipal Utility District's (EBMUD's) Geotechnical Engineering Section (GES), part of the Engineering & Construction Department's Engineering Services Division, is seeking an Associate Civil Engineer who is a motivated and energetic team player with experience in geotechnical engineering, project management, evaluations of dams and structures, as well as surveillance monitoring of dams, field investigations and evaluation of municipal water and wastewater structures and facilities. This individual will lead multi-disciplinary engineering teams as a project manager on complex engineering projects.

Responsibilities

• Lead multi-disciplinary engineering teams as a project manager on complex engineering projects
• Support the Dam Safety Capital Improvement Program, including retrofits to dams, outlet towers, and spillways
• Perform evaluations of existing and proposed tunnels, trenchless installations, and deep foundations
• Perform complex engineering analyses and calculations as needed
• Perform detailed design work including scope development, engineering calculations, and technical memorandums
• Prepare project feasibility studies and life cycle cost analyses
• Identify and mitigate project risks
• Develop and administer consultant contracts
• Prepare and comprehend construction contract documents (plans and specifications)
• Review submittals and RFIs
• Prepare cost estimates and project schedules
• Apply other related civil engineering principles and practices
• Direct the work of other engineers as project lead on multi-disciplinary engineering projects
• Prepare and deliver technical presentations

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in an ABET-accredited civil or geotechnical engineering curriculum OR a California EIT Certificate
• Four years of professional civil and/or geotechnical engineering experience (subsequent to obtaining the degree), including at least two years of experience at the level of EBMUD's Assistant Engineer classification
• California registration as a Professional Civil Engineer
• California specialty registration as a Geotechnical Engineer is highly desirable
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. To be considered under the "equivalent combination of education and experience" provision, it is your responsibility to include in your application materials written evidence of employment performed at the level of the typical duties of this position and/or coursework in subject areas directly related to this position

Skills

• Significant knowledge and experience in project planning and management
• Thorough knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles and practices
• Experience as project lead on multi-disciplinary engineering projects directing the work of other engineers
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Good interpersonal skills working with other engineers, operations and maintenance staff, federal and state dam safety regulators and other agencies, contractors, and consultants
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Pay

The salary range is $13,124 per month increasing to $13,780, $14,469, $15,192 and $15,952 after 6, 18, 30, and 42 months, respectively.
