Salary: $18.69 - $28.04 hourly / $38,885 - $58,327 annually. This position is a Pay Band C3.

About the Role

This position performs environmental testing of water samples for the presence of chemical pollutants. The role supports the New Mexico Environment Department and other public and tribal entities by analyzing water and soil samples using standard operating procedures and EPA testing methods.

Responsibilities

  • Perform analyses of water and soil samples for chemical pollutants following standard operating procedures and EPA testing methods.
  • Process, evaluate, organize, and submit laboratory test results for supervisor review and acceptance.
  • Operate gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, and liquid chromatography instrumentation.
  • Manage inventory and order laboratory supplies.
  • Prepare sample kits for clients.

Customers

  • New Mexico Environment Department (Drinking Water Bureau, Ground Water Quality Bureau, Surface Water Quality Bureau, Solid Waste Bureau, Air Quality Bureau).
  • All New Mexico public water systems.
  • All New Mexico tribal entities.
  • National Park Service.
  • US Forest Service.
  • Contractors who manage public water systems.

Ideal Candidate

  • One year of experience working in an analytical or clinical laboratory.
  • One year of experience using standard laboratory equipment such as pipettes, volumetric flasks, graduated cylinders, pH indicators, and analytical balances.
  • One year of experience testing for environmental pollutants in water samples.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or a closely related field.
  • Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education.
  • Pre-employment drug screening required.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in a fully functional laboratory containing biological, chemical, physical, and radiological hazards.
  • Use of all applicable safety equipment and adherence to safety precautions specified by the employer is required.
  • Extended standing, repetitive trunk/arm/hand/neck movements with computer usage or assay/methodologies.
  • Use of high voltage electronic instrumentation and high-pressure gas cylinders.
  • Ability to lift/push up to 50 lbs.

Pay

$18.69 - $28.04 hourly / $38,885 - $58,327 annually.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement, and all terms/conditions of that agreement apply.
