Associate BBGN Mechanical Engineer
About the Role
Join the team that will define how the next-generation battleship is powered and operated. We are seeking a Propulsion Plant Integration Engineer to help bring a proven nuclear propulsion plant design into a new, first-of-a-kind battleship (BBGN). This is a hands-on, systems-level role where you'll work at the intersection of ship design, plant engineering, operations, and Navy decision-making.
Responsibilities
- Participate in conceptual studies to inform Navy decision-making on key propulsion plant features, tradeoffs, and risks.
- Support the integration of battleship-specific systems into the propulsion plant.
- Develop and refine concepts of operation for a single plant surface combatant.
- Validate design compliance with surface combatant and platform requirements and identify and resolve non-conformances.
- Interface with the battleship Lead Design Yard, BPMI, and Navy representatives to align propulsion plant integration with ship design and fleet needs.
- Perform system analysis to evaluate the impacts of design decisions.
- Coordinate with other engineering disciplines to ensure seamless propulsion plant integration into the overall ship design.
This role is a good fit if you enjoy big-picture systems thinking, early design influence, and working across organizational and technical boundaries to bring a complex ship concept to life.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering, or science field; or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering, or science field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior Navy experience with nuclear propulsion plant operations (ship or prototype).
- Background in submarine plant engineering or previous plant or prototype qualification.
- Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Naval Architecture/Marine, or Systems Engineering is preferred; other engineering degrees with relevant experience will be considered.
- Demonstrated self-starter with the ability to take an ambiguous task, structure the work, and drive it to closure.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple parallel technical issues.
- Good communication and technical writing skills, including the ability to clearly document analyses and present recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
