About the role
This Opportunity WSP is currently initiating a search for an Assistant Vice President – Hydrogeology for our Albuquerque, NM office. Be involved in projects with our US Mine Water & Environment Group and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client objectives and solves their challenges.
Responsibilities
- Working within our Mine Closure - Mine Environment Team on hydrogeology projects within the mining industry and beyond
- Deliver high-level consulting services in mine water management, mine permitting, mine closure planning, hydrogeological and surface water characterization investigations, and environmental impact assessments for global mining clients
- Provide senior technical review for documents, ensuring internal quality requirements for deliverables are met, and prepare technical deliverables and plans with a high degree of complexity
- Lead client delivery through project management and regulatory agency communications
- Build and maintain strong client relationships through strategic advisory and business development initiatives
- Shape capture strategies, lead proposals/interviews, and grow key accounts focused in the Southwestern United States and beyond
- Develop a client base for providing high-level hydrogeologic and environmental services including identifying additional business development opportunities in the public or private sector
- Coach and mentor early and mid-career staff, maintain quality standards, run design and data interpretation reviews, and be part of a collaborative, inclusive team culture
- Direct field programs, with a strong focus on health & safety culture
- Contribute to large, cross functional and multidisciplinary projects with on-call components while working collaboratively with engineers, geochemists, ecologists, GIS specialists, and other environmental experts
Requirements
- BSc in geology, civil engineering, mining, environmental science or close related field
- 10+ years of experience in mining hydrogeology, with a strong track record working across the full mining lifecycle
- Proven leadership in delivering large-scale, multi-disciplinary mining projects
- Proven client facing leadership—program management, scope/budget ownership, risk management, and stakeholder engagement
- Strong self-leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with employees at all levels of the organization
- Proficiency with office automation and communication software, technology, and tools
- Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, and identify the most cost-effective responses that will minimize waste, prevent pollution, and conserve resources
- Able to interact with a wide variety of sources, including project managers, clients, and sector-wide staff
- Works independently and provides guidance and leadership to mid-level to senior level team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC
- Willingness and ability to travel locally and internationally to support project delivery and client engagement may be occasionally required depending on project-specific requirements
- Excellent technical writing skills and the ability to distill complexity into crisp, defensible recommendations
- Passion for shaping sustainable mining practices and driving innovation
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
- Must be flexible to a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to prioritize responsibilities and quickly adapt to change in a pressure work environment
Qualifications
- MSc or PhD in Hydrogeology, or close related field
- Professional designation (e.g., P.G. or equivalent)
- Proven expertise in closure/closeout planning and permitting for mine sites
- Knowledge of New Mexico environmental regulations or ability to learn
- Strong experience with water quality and geochemistry is highly desired
- Experience integrating geological, geochemical, and hydrogeology disciplines
- Leadership and mentorship track record
