Assistant Vice President, Global Advancement
About the role
The Assistant Vice President, Global Advancement provides strategic leadership for a large, complex portfolio of regional and global teams within Global Advancement, guiding efforts that span multiple geographies. The AVP offers direction, mentorship, and counsel to advance high-impact philanthropic relationships on behalf of the ASU Foundation and Arizona State University.
Responsibilities
- Secures global philanthropic support in alignment with ASU and ASU Foundation priorities.
- Provides leadership for teams of development officers in the US and globally, coordinating work across these teams and ensuring connections with unit-based colleagues.
- Ensures strategic coordination and alignment to deliver a unified approach to relationship management, pipeline development and engagement strategies; lead regular planning and coordination processes to ensure consistency in cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship approaches across regions.
- Partner with senior foundation and university leadership to align Global Advancement efforts with institutional priorities.
- Serves as a central support and partner for Global Futures Laboratory (GFL) and Global Corporate Advancement.
- Partners closely with ASU Foundation leadership and ASU deans and directors to align expectations, build support, and advance fundraising strategies.
- Manages a portfolio of prospects as a lead-level gift officer, cultivating relationships, soliciting support, and stewarding donors.
- Recruits, hires, develops, trains, and mentors development officers to build high-performing fundraising teams.
- Oversees comprehensive staff management, including performance evaluation, professional development, annual operating plans, and budget oversight.
- Ensures accountability and transparency for fundraising performance, metrics, and data integrity, including timely and accurate documentation of donor activity.
- Aligns messaging and fundraising practices with foundation goals, objectives, and processes.
- Conceptualizes and leads targeted fundraising initiatives in support of institutional priorities.
- Fosters a collaborative, team-oriented culture that supports shared goals across the organization.
- Contributes strategic insight and leadership beyond fundraising, supporting broader foundation initiatives.
Requirements
Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with academic leadership, faculty, prospects, donors, and/or volunteers in a wide range of roles
Complex problem-solving skills coupled with the ability to conduct research, gather data, analyze information, and prepare effective, accurate, and timely reports and other documents to support development objectives
Strong leadership skills: ability to organize, motivate, and lead a team to achieve desired results
Ability to foster effective working relationships within a team environment
Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding information related to Foundation and University business and confidential prospect information
Ability to inquire about and understand organizational interests and needs, and determine how to persuade or market to that organization with compelling benefits
Ability to represent the institution well and possess an advocate’s belief in the vision of ASU as the New American University
Ability to project a strong positive image of the University through personal interaction with prospects, donors, and alumni

Community relations skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively within a diverse community
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups
Develops knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable working in donor/prospect computer database systems
Relevant Qualifications
Bachelor's degree
Ten (10) years’ relevant experience
Proven track record of soliciting and winning philanthropy at a lead gift level ($10M +) or equivalent experience at a corresponding level
Experience working in a multinational organization setting
Philanthropic expertise working with donors on complex gifts from discovery and cultivation through solicitation and stewardship – building genuine partnerships and deep institutional relationships
Management experience and demonstrated ability to build and grow a productive team
Strategic thought partner – working with colleagues to build big ideas and proposals and convey them externally
Ability to manage complex internal relationships and guide teams from various units to a successful outcome
