Assistant Vice President, Casualty Underwriting
About the role
The Casualty & Specialty Treaty Underwriter will play an important role in helping to drive AmericanAg's growth strategy. This is a hybrid position, working out of the Schaumburg, IL office a minimum of three days a week, with up to 25% travel.
Responsibilities
- Underwriting and overseeing new and renewal casualty and professional liability programs, including proportional and excess of loss treaty placements, that align with our risk appetite
- Working with and developing strong relationships with national and regional brokers to build business opportunities, strengthen market presence, and articulate the value of AmericanAg® in buying decisions
- Identifying clients that align with the company’s appetite and are additive to the overall portfolio
- Partnering with internal stakeholders—including underwriting, claims, actuarial/reserving, exposure management, and distribution—to support disciplined portfolio management and performance optimization
- Reviewing, negotiating, and finalizing treaty wordings in close collaboration with legal, ensuring consistency between intent, pricing, structure, and contractual terms
- Representing AmericanAg® at key industry forums and client engagements, reinforcing a client-focused approach and strengthening market visibility
- Maintaining strong underwriting governance through consistent portfolio monitoring, performance analysis, and adherence to compliance and risk management standards
- Actively monitoring market trends and engaging in strategic discussions with internal and external parties
Requirements
5+ years of progressive casualty and/or specialty reinsurance underwriting experience, with significant expertise in treaty business
Proven experience managing and growing profitable portfolios
Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively across all levels of an organization
Experience with reinsurance contract analysis, product development, and business development through broker distribution channels
Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, with a proactive and solutions-oriented approach
Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in a related field
Skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
Benefits
The expected starting salary range for this position is between $150,000 and $200,000. Applicable salary ranges may differ across markets. Actual pay will be determined based on experience and other job-related factors permitted by law.
This position is also eligible for an annual productivity bonus.
