About the Role
The Athletic Coach at Southeast Polk Senior High is responsible for creating an athletics program that fosters student learning and personal growth. This role involves establishing effective relationships with students, families, and peers, while guiding students to develop essential skills, attitudes, and knowledge for success in college, career, and civic life. The coach will work to realize the district's vision and mission, adhering to its core values.
Responsibilities
- Holds organizational meetings for team prospects and encourages potential athletes to participate.
- Assesses player skills and assigns team positions.
- Develops a regular practice schedule and organizes practice time for individual and team development.
- Works with the athletics director to schedule facilities for practices and competitions.
- Assigns duties to assistant coaches as necessary.
- Coaches and instructs players on rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
- Observes players during competition and practice to identify areas for improvement.
- Determines game strategy based on team capabilities.
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior, providing proper supervision at all times.
- Monitors academic performance to ensure eligibility requirements are met and encourages high academic standards.
- Follows established procedures for athlete injuries.
- Conferences with parents/guardians regarding athletic performance.
- Adheres to state, regional, and district regulations governing the athletic program.
- Models sportsmanship and maintains appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
- Acts as a team representative, promoting the sport through communication with media, booster clubs, and other organizations.
- Manages equipment, supplies, and uniforms, ensuring proper care and maintenance.
- Works with the athletic director to develop award policies and submits award winners at the end of the season.
- Participates in special activities such as parent's night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.
- Maintains records including eligibility forms, emergency data cards, insurance records, and equipment inventory.
- Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
- Attends staff development meetings, clinics, and professional activities to improve coaching performance.
Qualifications
- Coaching Authorization or Endorsement issued by the Iowa Department of Education.
- Demonstrated proficiency to perform specific assignment.
- Preference given to successful experience at the assignment/level.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
