Assistant United States Attorney (Criminal)

About the role

The U.S. Attorney's Office in South Dakota seeks exceptional, motivated attorneys to prosecute federal crime on behalf of the United States. Assistant U.S. Attorneys are entrusted with robust caseloads and work closely with federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies.

Responsibilities

• Prosecute federal crimes including drug trafficking, child exploitation, violent crime, illegal immigration, firearms offenses, national security, cybercrime, and white-collar fraud.
• Partner with law enforcement agencies to investigate crimes, present criminal cases to a federal grand jury, research and brief legal issues, and represent the United States before federal courts.
• Prosecute Major Crimes Act violations in Indian Country, including murder, child sex abuse, rape, and other violent crimes.
• Work in a dynamic, committed, and energetic environment with colleagues passionate about achieving justice on behalf of the United States.

Requirements

• United States citizenship required.
• J.D. degree and active bar membership (any U.S. jurisdiction).
• Superior analytical ability, strong research and courtroom skills, fair and sound judgment.
• Collaborative working style, excellent communication skills, and commitment to public service.
• One year or more of criminal prosecutorial experience preferred.
• Reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles.
• Occasional travel to court and witness interviews required.

Pay and Schedule

Salary is administratively determined based on years of professional attorney experience, ranging from $76,748 to $197,100, inclusive of locality pay.

This is a temporary position offering limited benefits such as paid vacation, sick leave, telework, and holidays.
