Assistant United States Attorney (Criminal)
About the role
The position is located in Buffalo, NY and involves helping employment with the U.S. Attorney's Office. The Criminal Division focuses on enforcing federal criminal laws that protect life, liberty, and property.
Responsibilities
- Investigate and prosecute cases involving cartels, foreign terrorist organizations, and other organized crime, drug trafficking, human trafficking, alien smuggling, illegal immigration, child exploitation, cyber offenses, and schemes to defraud, including elder fraud and government program fraud.
- Provide guidance to law enforcement officers.
- Initiate criminal charges.
- Conduct grand jury proceedings and felony trials.
- Handle appeals.
Requirements
- J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction).
- Reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.
- Must be a United States Citizen or National.
- Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication.
- Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
- Must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
Qualifications
- Outstanding legal ability.
- Mature judgment.
- Demonstrated excellence in criminal trials.
- J.D. degree and at least 1 year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.
- Legal practice and trial experience related to criminal prosecution.
- Quick analytical ability and the facility to articulate critical issues.
- Superior oral, trial, and writing skills, as well as strong research and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with the court, other attorneys, support staff, and client agencies.
- Capacity to function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding litigative environment.
- Excellent computer literacy skills, including experience with automated research, electronic court filing, electronic e-mail, and word processing systems.

Pay
The range of basic pay is $65,563 to $171,487.
Schedule
Occasional travel to the Rochester, NY office; to Columbia, S.C. for training; and travel throughout the District as required.
