About the role
The U.S. Attorney's Office in South Dakota seeks exceptional, motivated attorneys to prosecute federal crime on behalf of the United States. Assistant U.S. Attorneys are entrusted with robust caseloads, top-tier training, and a dedicated team of colleagues.
Responsibilities
- Prosecute federal crimes including drug trafficking, child exploitation, violent crime, illegal immigration, firearms offenses, national security, cybercrime, and white-collar fraud.
- Partner with federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to investigate crimes, present criminal cases to a federal grand jury, research and brief legal issues, and represent the United States before federal courts.
- Handle Major Crimes Act violations in Indian Country including murder, child sex abuse, rape, and other violent crimes.
Requirements
- Must be a United States Citizen or National.
- Must possess a J.D. degree and be an active member of a bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) by the entry on duty date.
- Must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
- Must be a member, or be eligible to become a member, of the federal district court bar.

- Required: J.D. Degree and active bar membership.
- Preferred: Superior analytical ability, strong research and courtroom skills, fair and sound judgment, collaboration with law enforcement, excellent communication, and commitment to public service.

Range of pay is $76,748 to $197,100, inclusive of locality pay.
