About the role

The mission of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of NC is to enforce the law, defend the interests of the United States, provide Federal leadership in preventing and controlling crime, seek just punishment for those guilty of unlawful behavior, and administer and enforce the Nation's laws to ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans. The office strives to build a stronger team through recruitment efforts and maintain high standards by promoting professional development.

Responsibilities

• Prosecute a wide variety of federal crimes, including breaches of national security, child exploitation, human trafficking, fraud, narcotics trafficking, firearm offenses, transnational organized crime, and violent crime.
• Represent the United States in the investigation and prosecution of cases involving violent crime, illegal immigration, and drug trafficking, with a focus on cartels and transnational criminal organizations.
• Assist in building a stronger office through recruitment efforts and maintaining high standards of professionalism.

Requirements

• Residency Requirement: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.
• Selective Service: If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, you must certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under the Selective Service Law. See www.sss.gov.
• Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
• J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required.

Qualifications

• Required Qualifications:
• A J.D. Degree, active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and at least 3 years post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.
• U.S. citizenship is required.
• Preferred Qualifications:
• Superior analytical ability;
• Strong research, writing, and courtroom skills;
• Independent exercise of fair and sound judgment;
• Ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, and law enforcement agencies;
• Professional interaction with opposing counsel;

Education

Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree.

Additional information

• Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of pay is $82,459 to $197,100 which includes 17.06% locality pay.
• The positions are located in Greensboro, NC and Winston-Salem, NC.
