Assistant United States Attorney (Criminal)
About the role
This is an open-continuous announcement for Assistant United States Attorneys in the Criminal Division of our Macon, GA and Columbus, GA offices. This announcement will remain open until all available positions are filled.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
- Represent the Government's interests at hearings and trials before the United States District Court.
- Exercise fair and sound judgment, pay careful attention to facts and details, and work well both independently and on a team.
- Exhibit strong interpersonal and professional skills, and work with other attorneys, support staff, and client agencies in a professional manner.
- Have strong ability to analyze complex legal and factual issues, write clearly and persuasively, and possess excellent negotiation skills.
Requirements
Positions are located in Macon, GA and Columbus, GA.
- Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing.
- Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
- Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof.
- Must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Applicants must possess a J.D. degree (or equivalent) and be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) by their entry on duty date. Law school graduates and current law students taking a July 2026 bar examination may be considered, subject to the foregoing requirements.
- United States citizenship is required.

- The ability to work with other attorneys, support staff, and client agencies in a professional manner.

Additional information
Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $65,563 to $153,834 plus 17.06% locality pay for the Macon, GA office and 23.79% for the Columbus, GA office.

- Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses will not be authorized.
Travel: 1 to 5 nights of travel required per month

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
Evaluation Method: Once your complete application package is received, it will be reviewed to ensure you meet all job requirements. An attorney interview panel will then review all qualified applicants and make recommendations for invitation to interview. You will be notified if selected for an interview.
