The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of New York (NDNY) serves an area comprised of 32 counties in upstate New York. Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) are staffed in Albany, Binghamton, Plattsburgh, and Syracuse, and appear before federal judges there and in Utica. Approximately 55 attorneys and 51 support personnel work in NDNY, along with several subject-matter specialist contract personnel.

About the Role

The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of New York (NDNY) is seeking Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) to work in the Criminal Division in its Albany, Binghamton, Plattsburgh, or Syracuse, New York office. These positions focus on criminal casework involving violent crime, drug smuggling, public corruption, white collar crime, immigration, and the opioid epidemic.

The selected AUSAs will work with law enforcement agencies to investigate crimes, research and brief legal issues, and represent the United States before grand juries and in hearings, trials, and appeals. Day-to-day responsibilities may include:

  • Working with law enforcement agencies to investigate matters
  • Researching legal issues
  • Drafting motions, motion responses, and search warrants
  • Appearing before grand juries
  • Other litigation-related duties

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as training and experience progress.

The Criminal Division is comprised of approximately 39 attorneys responsible for prosecuting federal crimes, including offenses involving:

  • Drug trafficking and smuggling
  • Child exploitation
  • Gang activity and violence
  • Illegal immigration
  • National and border security
  • Fraudulent and/or corrupt conduct in government, health care, banking, securities and corporate activity, federal procurement, bankruptcies, and federal taxation

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree (or equivalent)
  • Active member in good standing of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction)
  • At least 1 year of post-J.D. (or equivalent) legal or other relevant experience
  • United States citizenship

Skills

Required:

  • At least 3 years of post-J.D. experience with significant opportunity to develop strong legal writing, oral advocacy, and courtroom litigation skills
  • Facility with federal criminal practice
  • Comfort with all aspects of electronic discovery and litigation
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with AUSAs, law enforcement, support staff, and court personnel
  • Impeccable integrity
  • Self-motivated, justice-oriented, organized, and courteous

Pay

Assistant United States Attorney pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $65,563 to $171,487 per year, plus a locality pay supplement, where authorized.

  • For Binghamton, Plattsburgh, or Syracuse, NY: $76,748 to $197,100 per year (includes 17.06% locality pay)
  • For Albany, NY: $79,180 to $197,100 per year (includes 20.77% locality pay)
