About the role
The Assistant General Counsel serves as a key member of the legal team, focusing on labor relations and providing comprehensive legal support across the company's U.S. and Canadian operations.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and negotiate labor agreements, including cost modeling, in collaboration with business and HR teams.
- Represent the company in negotiations with union leaders and serve as primary legal advisor for grievances and unfair labor practice charges.
- Create and deliver training sessions on employee relations and various legal and compliance topics.
- Affirm compliance with U.S. and Canadian labor laws and assist with corporate governance matters.
- Support mergers and acquisitions, draft, review, and negotiate a wide array of contracts, and provide legal advice to different departments.
- Collaborate with external legal counsel as necessary.
- Assist with strategic projects and initiatives under the guidance of the Chief Legal Officer.
Requirements
- Demonstrated leadership and management experience in labor relations, handling multiple unions and jurisdictions.
- Extensive experience in contract drafting and negotiation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to adapt to change and manage competing priorities.
- Ability to travel up to 75% of the time.
- Education: 5-10 years of relevant experience in labor relations, J.D. from an accredited law school, and licensure as In-House Counsel.
Qualifications
- Proven ability to lead and manage labor relations effectively.
- Experience in managing a high volume of multi-union, multi-state collective bargaining agreements.
- Strong academic background with a J.D. from an accredited law school.
- Licensed and in good standing in at least one state, with eligibility to become licensed as In-House Counsel if not currently licensed.
