About the company: The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of New York (NDNY) serves 32 counties in upstate New York. Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) are stationed in Albany, Binghamton, Plattsburgh, and Syracuse, appearing before federal judges in those cities and in Utica. The office employs approximately 55 attorneys and 51 support personnel, along with several subject-matter specialist contract personnel. About the role

The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of New York (NDNY) is seeking Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) for its Criminal Division in Albany, Binghamton, Plattsburgh, or Syracuse, New York. The Criminal Division comprises approximately 39 attorneys responsible for prosecuting federal crimes, including:

  • Drug trafficking and smuggling
  • Child exploitation
  • Gang activity and violence
  • Illegal immigration
  • National and border security
  • Fraudulent and/or corrupt conduct in government, health care, banking, securities, corporate activity, federal procurement, bankruptcies, and federal taxation

The selected AUSAs will focus on criminal casework involving violent crime, drug smuggling, public corruption, white collar crime, immigration, and the opioid epidemic. They will collaborate with law enforcement agencies to investigate crimes, research and brief legal issues, and represent the United States before grand juries and in hearings, trials, and appeals.

Responsibilities

  • Work with law enforcement agencies to investigate crimes

  • Represent the United States before grand juries and in hearings, trials, and appeals
  • Draft motions or motion responses
  • Draft search warrants
  • Perform other litigation-related duties

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as training and experience progress.

Qualifications

  • J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required
  • Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof
  • United States citizenship
  • At least 1 year of post-J.D. (or equivalent) legal or other relevant experience

Skills

  • Possess a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree (or equivalent)
  • Active member in good standing of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction)

Preferred Skills

  • At least 3 years of post-J.D. experience with significant opportunity to develop strong legal writing, oral advocacy, and courtroom litigation skills
  • Demonstrated facility with federal criminal practice
  • Comfort with all aspects of electronic discovery and litigation
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with AUSAs, law enforcement, support staff, and court personnel
  • Impeccable integrity
  • Self-motivated, justice-oriented, organized, and courteous

Pay

Assistant United States Attorney pay is administratively determined based, in part, on years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $65,563 to $171,487 per year, plus a locality pay supplement, where authorized.

  • For Binghamton, Plattsburgh, or Syracuse, NY: total salary range is $76,748 to $197,100 per year (includes 17.06% locality pay)
  • For Albany, NY: total salary range is $79,180 to $197,100 per year (includes 20.77% locality pay)
