About the Department

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is the intellectual hub of the University of Oregon, serving nearly two-thirds of all students. Home to more than 800 faculty across 50+ departments and programs in the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, CAS is a dynamic and interdisciplinary academic community. The Department of Romance Languages, located in the Schnitzer School of Global Studies and Languages, researches and instructs in French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish languages and literature. It is the largest language department at the University of Oregon and frequently intersects with other departments and colleges on campus. The department sponsors and supports numerous activities such as lectures, film festivals, study abroad programs, international conferences, and community events.

About the Role

The Department of Romance Languages seeks a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor of Spanish Language and Culture, to teach undergraduate language and culture classes at the lower- and upper-division levels, with primary assignment in the beginning and intermediate levels. A full course load for this position is 9 courses per year (three per quarter).

Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate Spanish language and culture classes at the lower- and upper-division levels, primarily at the beginning and intermediate levels.
• Work collaboratively in a multi-sectioned program with graduate employees and faculty (both Teaching and Research Professors).

Requirements

• MA in Spanish, applied linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, language pedagogy, or a related field before the start date.
• Instructional experience at the college-level with beginning and intermediate programs in Spanish.
• Professional-level language proficiency in both Spanish and English.
• Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds and contribute to institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with curriculum development, program articulation, proficiency assessment, placement testing, service learning, or other areas of program development.
• Experience supervising/coordinating multi-sectioned language programs.
• Experience teaching Spanish as a Heritage Language.
• Experience with recruitment and advising.
• Experience with promoting academic programs.
