Primary Objective

The Assistant Teacher (Birth to 3) – Child Development Center provides instructional, clerical and non-instructional support in the Child Development Center classroom, implementing a developmentally appropriate curriculum that aligns with the educational and philosophical goals of the program.

Essential Duties

  • Adheres to the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct, demonstrating a professional attitude and work ethic, and respect for children, families, and colleagues.
  • Provides a safe, healthy environment for children, focusing on classroom health, hygiene, nutrition, and safety. This includes maintaining a clean and orderly environment for the children; ensuring children attend personal hygiene/hand washing; teaching children about health and nutrition; reporting accidents, injuries, and illnesses to parents and supervisors.
  • Assists the teacher in developing and implementing an environment and curriculum that provides for a variety of developmentally appropriate activities to promote children’s development in language and literacy, cognition, social-emotional well-being, and physical health.
  • Maintains required paperwork, logs, and records, and documents individual children and the class as a whole.
  • Ensures children’s safety through constant supervision, storage of dangerous materials, and classroom and equipment maintenance.
  • Works with other teaching staff to create a nurturing, stimulating, non-punitive, and culturally sensitive environment that encourages language, self-expression, exploration, creativity, imaginative play, thinking skills, and positive relationships.
  • Greets parents warmly and communicates their child’s experience at the center through daily contact, scheduled conferences, and written documentation as required.
  • Participates in quality enhancement initiatives and staff meetings, planning, and professional development.
  • Adheres to requirements put forth by funding, licensing, and accreditation agencies.
  • Performs other duties as required and maintains classroom atmosphere and requirements in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Adheres to CCC Customer Service Excellence standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Child Development, Early Childhood, or a related field, plus at least one (1) year of experience with infants and toddlers is required.
  • Illinois Gateways to Opportunity Infant Toddler Credential, Level 4.
  • A warm, supportive attitude towards children.
  • A flexible approach to receiving assignments and adapting to changes in the program.
  • A willingness to accept supervision and engage in continuous professional development.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with children, parents, and other staff members, as well as document children’s growth and learning.
  • An understanding of and ability to address the physical, social, cognitive, and emotional needs of children.
  • An ability to work effectively within a culturally diverse environment with tact and diplomacy.
  • Proficiency in operating computers and using applicable software.

Pay

$51,954/annual

This position is represented by the Local 1600 Professional Employee Union.

Chicago residency is required for all full-time employees within 6 months of hire.
