About the Role
Looking for a motivated, skilled Assistant Supervisor to join the Facilities Management FSS-Signs department on the Oklahoma State University campus. The candidate will assist the Facilities Support Services Manager and Supervisor with all responsibilities for the sign shop, including supervising and performing visual communication and signage needs for the campus.
Responsibilities include the systematic inspection, detection, and correction of signage issues either before they occur or before they develop into major defects. Assist with scheduling tasks, assigning technicians, and performing tasks such as replacing signs and banners, as well as preventive and predictive maintenance on sign shop equipment like computerized sign equipment and engravers.
Ensure work requests are accurately translated to service requests and that tasks are assessed, allocated, and completed appropriately. This position requires professional interaction with customers and employees to enhance work effectiveness for the Facilities Support Services crew.
Must be available for snow and ice removal tasks and respond at any time of the day or night when scheduled by management, designating you as essential personnel. Some irregular and extra hours may be required for projects and emergencies, including evenings, weekends, and university closures. Emergencies may involve difficult working conditions.
This work involves regular exposure to uncomfortable and hazardous conditions, such as extreme temperatures, moving machinery, electrical sources, hazardous chemicals, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and loud noises. The position requires regular physical exertion, including occasional lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying of equipment and supplies. Must be able to remain stationary or move about for 50% of the time and occasionally ascend/descend heights to accomplish work.
Due to communication expectations, the incumbent must maintain a personal cell phone and be continually available both during and after normal working hours. Must use appropriate personal protective equipment (e.g., gloves, safety glasses) as required.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Facilities Support Services Manager and Supervisor with all sign shop responsibilities.
- Supervise and perform visual communication and signage tasks for the campus.
- Inspect, detect, and correct signage issues before they develop into major defects.
- Schedule tasks, assign technicians, and perform tasks including sign and banner replacement.
- Conduct preventive and predictive maintenance on sign shop equipment (e.g., computerized sign equipment, engravers).
- Translate work requests into service requests and ensure accurate assessment, allocation, and completion of tasks.
- Interact professionally with customers and employees to enhance work effectiveness.
- Perform snow and ice removal tasks as essential personnel, responding at any time of day or night when scheduled.
- Work irregular and extra hours as needed for projects and emergencies, including non-business hours.
- Operate in uncomfortable and hazardous conditions, including exposure to extreme temperatures, moving machinery, chemicals, and loud noises.
- Maintain physical exertion, including lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying equipment and supplies.
- Use personal protective equipment as required.
- Perform all other assigned duties.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED (degree must be conferred on or before the agreed-upon start date).
- One of the following:
- Two years of post-secondary education in a technical field and four years of prior successful work experience, with three of those years in sign manufacture, carpentry, computer, graphic arts, or a related organization.
- High School graduate/GED and six years of prior successful work experience, with five of those years in sign manufacture, carpentry, computer, graphic arts, or related experience.
- Post-secondary education may substitute for years of required experience.
- Valid driver’s license (must have before hire and maintain after hire).
Skills
- Ability to manage and motivate people.
- Frequent communication with customers and employees to exchange accurate information.
- Proficiency with Outlook, Word, and Excel for departmental record-keeping and strong organizational skills.
- Skills in evaluating the work of others to ensure adherence to stated standards.
- Conflict resolution and problem-solving involving tenants and contractors regarding contract requirements.
- Considerable knowledge of methods, standards, and equipment used in visual communications to manufacture and install signage.
- Experience with computerized sign systems, engraving systems, sign-making software, saws, drills, joiners, spray equipment, sanders, and man lifts.
- Ability to estimate costs and assess bids.
- Effective and accurate communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with contractors and departmental representatives.
- Ability to work independently and present a friendly, positive demeanor to all clients, including faculty, staff, and the general public.
- Basic knowledge of building codes.
- Ability to become proficient in the use of "AiM" Computerized Management System (CMMS) software and mobile technology.
Preferred Qualifications
- Vocational/Technical education in Signage or Visual Communications.
- Six years of prior successful work experience in a university, commercial, or industrial building maintenance/signage organization.
Pay
$18.00 - $21.00 per hour (contingent upon available funding).
Schedule
Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM or as determined by supervisor. Some irregular and extra hours may be required for projects and emergencies, including evenings, weekends, and university closures.
