About the Role

Assistant Superintendents are dedicated on-site construction managers, coordinating and overseeing detailed scopes of work and safety of field crew and subcontractors. This role requires highly advanced interior and exterior carpentry skills and a demonstrated ability to execute work within very tight tolerances. You will provide creative constructability solutions to design challenges and ensure the high-quality work Dowbuilt is known for. The position is based at a project site in Morgan, UT and requires regular on-site presence.

You will collaborate with crew, clients, vendors, subtrades, designers, engineers, consultants, and architects, leveraging deep knowledge of construction best practices and effective communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all promised deadlines are met; identify slipping deadlines early and communicate new deadlines to the Superintendent and Project Manager.
  • Lead the finish crew with a positive attitude and collaborative approach.
  • Utilize Field Check-Ins quarterly for performance feedback, mentoring, and career development.
  • Conduct site walk-throughs to help subcontractors prepare proposals and site-specific safety plans.
  • Enforce workplace rules, site rules, and safety guidelines; implement disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Collaborate with the Project Team to establish a finish scope estimate (Control Estimate) and co-manage Dowbuilt labor, materials, and subcontractor costs (Cost-to-Complete report review).
  • Manage and conduct building layout and dimensional control, proficient with builder’s level, rotary laser levels, total stations, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Superintendent to establish and maintain manpower projections; report changes in resource needs to the labor management team.
  • Plan, communicate, and maintain daily and weekly work scopes and finish expectations with the crew using the 3-week look-ahead and other tools.
  • Provide information for Daily Job Logs verbally, in writing, or via Fieldwire or other approved Dowbuilt platforms.
  • Ensure all employees have required tools and equipment per Company Tool Policy and project requirements.
  • Provide field-generated information (as-built drawings, photos, architectural measurements) in accurate, thorough, and legible formats using Fieldwire, Sharefile, and other official platforms.
  • Document as-built information regularly and ensure adherence to quality standards and finish work protection.
  • Conduct Employee Development Meetings (EDMs) and written Field Check-ins with reporting staff as needed and at project completion.
  • Maintain neighbor relations with the Superintendent.
  • Maintain a positive, solution-oriented attitude.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of experience as a carpenter/finish carpenter, preferably in residential construction.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with company software tools: MS Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word), Bluebeam, FieldWire, Procore, and Smartsheet.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive work environment and leading diverse teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management or related field and/or equivalent professional experience.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Completion of appropriate safety training commensurate with the position and location.

  • Ability to follow instructions, take notes, and perform designated work.
  • Active listening skills, ability to ask for help, and suggest solutions.

Master Finish Carpenter Competencies

  • Trim work (paint or stain grade) with tight joints and no gaps.
  • Crown molding installation at various wall angles with coped or mitered joinery.
  • Base coping expertise.
  • Paneling fabrication and installation.
  • Expertise in dimensioning lumber to exact size, including tapered pieces.
  • Familiarity with stair work, including handrails and skirt boards.
  • Satisfactory math skills for calculating angles, pitches for roofs, stairs, and railings.
  • Efficient door hanging with even reveals on three sides.
  • Customizing doors to correct size and configuration, including gluing up multi-piece moving wall-type doors.
  • Hanging blank doors from scratch.
  • Familiarity with mortising and installing door hardware.
  • Glue-up joinery skills for shelving, table, or bench tops.
  • Familiarity with sharpening techniques for chisels and plane blades; keeping edge tools sharp.
  • Skilled and efficient cabinet installer; tight scribed joints in cabinetry and casework.
