About the role

This position oversees the installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of the water, sewer, and storm distribution systems. The primary responsibilities include responding to emergencies, conducting inspections, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to emergency calls and takes necessary steps to minimize damage and interruption of service; shuts down the system if necessary.
  • Provides emergency triage to protect public property and completes all reports such as accident/incident or hazardous spills ensuring compliance with EPA rules.
  • Investigates and documents incidents that have or may result in claims against the City or for which CBU may file claims against another entity.
  • Supervises crews for completion of emergency repairs, maintenance, and restoration of service.
  • Determines equipment and parts necessary to accomplish the priorities.
  • Plans multiple work assignments and schedules for crew members.
  • Participates in the more difficult/unusual operations.
  • Conducts necessary follow-up to ensure site safety, job quality, customer satisfaction, and environmental controls are addressed.
  • Ensures safety of site including crews, pedestrians, and vehicles with proper scheduling, notification, and signage.
  • Conforms to all safety laws and regulations including digging, trenching, shoring, confined space entry, and hazardous materials.
  • Plans and directs the safe installation of restraint systems such as thrust blocking and tie backs considering site conditions.
  • Confirms that water pressure remains at proper levels to operate fire hydrants and for water quality purposes.
  • Directs or performs flushes and purification to ensure quality water delivery adhering to federal, state, and local environmental standards for water discharge for the protection of people, wildlife, and property.
  • Works from plans, specifications, written, and oral directions; makes as-built sketches and reports of completed work.
  • Interprets and enforces departmental, City, and State rules, regulations, and standards.
  • Reads and interprets construction and design blueprints to determine correct location and grade for all installations and possible obstructions or conflicts that could change work plans.
  • Receives new work, fills out work orders, sends completed work orders, and records work details utilizing automated wireless, handheld and work station devices along with various software programs.
  • Teaches, trains, and mentors subordinates on complex tasks and creates/considers alternative solutions for various tasks.
  • Makes recommendations on personnel actions such as hiring process, appointments, and disciplinary matters.
  • Ensures compliance with City policies and union contracts.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED, specialized training, or equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position.
  • Minimum Five Years' Experience.
  • This position is required to have a current Distribution System Large (DSL) license issued by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) or equivalent from another State.
  • Must possess and maintain a current driver's license.
  • Prioritize obtaining the Indiana Water Environment Association Collections 2 certification within 12 months of hire.
