About the role
The Assistant Stylist is a temporary position designed to prepare talent for a full Stylist role, focusing on delivering quality professional services with an emphasis on the guest’s total look. For the first three months, the Assistant Stylist supports and is mentored by an Elite or Master Stylist, concentrating on performance (earning power and productivity), guest service, and operational compliance. From months 4-6, the Assistant Stylist begins servicing guests independently while continuing to assist. This role requires a passion for the beauty industry, exceptional guest service, and a willingness to learn technical skills and product knowledge.
Responsibilities
- Deliver exceptional guest service and contribute to store goals for retail and service sales, guest loyalty (including credit), and retail shrink.
- Support mentor Stylist in meeting sales and productivity goals for hair services and products through:
- Add-on recommendations
- Shampoo and treatment processes
- Blowouts and styling
- Global and retouch color applications
- Assisting with foils (e.g., folding/handing foils)
- Cleaning, sanitation, and organizing duties
- Pre-booking and retail recommendations
- After three months, perform hair services including hair design, haircuts, color, texture services, treatments, styling, updos, perms, blowouts, keratin treatments, extensions, makeup applications, brow services, and ear piercing (where applicable).
- Conduct product demonstrations to drive sales and enhance the guest experience.
- Support in-store events, promotions, and marketing initiatives to deliver an unrivaled guest experience.
- Stay informed about new and existing industry trends, products, and services during work time, and educate guests on their benefits.
- Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
- Develop guest relationships through consultations and tailored retail/service recommendations.
- Serve all guests, including walk-ins, in a timely and efficient manner under mentorship.
- Collaborate with skin therapists and the retail team to provide a holistic guest experience.
- Build professional relationships with peers and brand partners to enhance guest service.
- Promote the guest loyalty program, including credit and the Ulta Beauty app.
- Ensure compliance with Ulta Beauty’s policies, procedures, and standards.
- Follow all safety, sanitation, and infection control procedures before, during, and after services, adhering to state board guidelines.
- Utilize service protocols to ensure a consistent and exceptional guest experience.
- Use booking and clientele systems to schedule return services and events.
- Communicate supply needs to the Experience Manager to maintain guest readiness.
- Maintain cleanliness and operational standards in the salon, salesfloor, restrooms, backroom, break area, and assigned spaces.
- Attend mandatory trainings and meetings for continuous professional development.
- Adhere to the Ulta Beauty dress code and loss prevention best practices.
- Protect company assets by providing exceptional guest service.
- Perform other operational tasks as directed.
Requirements
- Cosmetology license.
- Basic understanding of salon techniques for haircutting, haircolor, lightening, styling, texture services, treatments, extensions, makeup, brow services, and ear piercing (where applicable), or an aptitude to develop these skills.
- Basic knowledge of equipment and chemicals used in technical services.
- Ability to demonstrate, recommend, and sell professional hair care and makeup products.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to build and maintain strong customer relationships and clientele.
- Flexible schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Working Conditions
- Frequent mobility, bending, reaching, and twisting during shifts.
- Continuous lifting and/or moving of up to 10 lbs.
- Ability to stand for long periods during shifts.
- Continuous coordination and manipulation of objects.
- Frequent use of computers, telephonic devices, and related office/cosmetology supplies.
Pay
The pay range for this position is $15.00 - $16.80 per hour. Exact pay is based on factors including education, qualifications, certifications, experience, level, shift, geographic location, and business needs. Eligible associates may also earn overtime pay as required by law and tips from service guests.
