About the role

The Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach will support student-athlete development by designing and implementing a comprehensive, best-in-class physical preparation framework to enhance athletic performance, minimize injury risk, and sustain a culture of championship habits and behaviors within the daily training environment. This includes working closely with the Men’s and Women’s Soccer programs, as well as other team assignments based on candidate background and the needs of the department.

Responsibilities

  • Program Development
    • Works in conjunction with the head coaches of assigned teams to implement all aspects of training including scheduling, supervision, training environment, motivation, and goal setting for individual athletes and team.
    • Develops and implements year-round, sport specific training programs—including resistance, cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility, agility, and speed programs—to maximize athletic performance and limit injury potential.
    • Maintains “cutting edge” approach to strength & conditioning by researching literature, observing programs at other institutions, and establishing valuable professional contacts/relationships.
    • Applies professional expertise to evaluate findings and develop programs to meet sport-specific needs and goals.
    • Supports, communicates, and collaborates with team doctors, athletic trainers, nutritionists, and other specialists to enhance the physical development of student-athletes.
    • Regularly assesses and refines programs to maximize positive results.
  • Education, Training and Evaluation
    • Conducts orientation sessions for varsity athletic teams to explain and demonstrate the modalities of physical training to be used for each exercise program and the associated risk management considerations.
    • Teaches and instructs Olympic movements, acceleration, agility drills, speed and flexibility techniques.
    • Evaluates athletes to determine problem areas (weaknesses, imbalances, flexibility) and designs corrective programs.
    • Performs testing of athletes before and after program participation. Prepares results and an evaluation for each program.
  • Communication
    • Documents athletes’ workout attendance, performance and test results.
    • Reports results to, and consults with, team coaches regarding the developmental progress or lack thereof for individual athletes.
    • Provides continuous feedback and recommendations to coaches and student-athletes regarding program improvements and changes.
    • Promotes the College’s athletic program and assists in the recruitment process by meeting with prospective student-athletes on campus and providing friendly, positive and energetic recruiting presentations and personal interactions in the weight room.
  • Professional/Staff Development
    • Participates in the selection, training and supervision of strength and conditioning interns and student workers.
    • Actively participates in formal and informal professional development activities, including membership in the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
    • Maintains continuing education credits for certifications.
  • Facility Scheduling and Management
    • Affords assistance with the scheduling, maintenance, supervision and oversight of the varsity weight room.
    • Works with the Athletic Facilities Office to schedule spaces to conduct team agility, speed work and conditioning sessions.
    • Enforces adherence to weight room policies and procedures for use and risk management of all training facilities.
    • Insures adherence to safety, cleanliness and security standards and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Certification through the NSCA (CSCS) or CSCCa (SCCC)
  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant NCAA D1, pro, or Olympic experience
  • Proficient in performance technology (Catapult, force plates, etc.)
  • Strong background and interest in soccer

Skills

  • Effective leadership ability and strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Enthusiastic and creative motivational ability
  • Demonstrated learning orientation in the area of sports performance training and protocols
  • Proficient in teaching Olympic movements, speed and acceleration techniques, change of direction, flexibility techniques and specific conditioning for male and female varsity sport teams
  • Prior experience in designing training and reconditioning programs for injured athletes
  • Demonstrate a knowledge base in various aspects of nutrition
  • Proficient computer skills with a major emphasis on Excel spreadsheets
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population
  • Minimum of three years experience working with high level athletes
  • Bachelor’s Degree in exercise science or a related field
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (C.S.C.S.) by NSCA, First Aid and CPR certification preferred

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in exercise science or a related field
