Assistant Store Manager, Petsense
About the Role
This position serves as the second in charge of operations to the Store Manager. Responsibilities include providing leadership and direction to the store and salon team, ensuring a positive customer shopping experience, performing operational activities, and promoting a safe and productive work environment. The role involves training team members on policies and procedures and acting as the store leader during the Store Manager’s absence.
Responsibilities
- Assist Store Manager in driving sales, profit, customer loyalty, planning, prioritization, and delegating daily tasks.
- Support hiring, staffing, scheduling, training, and maintaining a productive work environment for Team Members and Salon Team Members.
- Lead the store in the Store Manager’s absence (e.g., PTO, LOA).
- Order live goods and store supplies; train and certify Team Leaders in receiving processes.
- Coach store team members on operations to grow sales and profitability.
- Execute merchandising initiatives, expense control, profit/loss management, and shrink reduction.
- Perform basic, promotional, and seasonal merchandising activities, including Plan-o-gram procedures (merchandising, sets, and resets).
- Conduct opening/closing procedures, transport and deposit funds, and reconcile cash drawers and vault daily.
- Operate cash registers, supervise cash handling, and assess store conditions to assign duties.
- Organize and prioritize workflow using the daily planner; perform recovery of merchandise.
- Participate in the freight process, including regular and promotional price changes.
- Resolve customer complaints/issues to ensure a positive experience.
- Adhere to loss prevention standards and respond to alarm calls as needed.
- Communicate job functions, responsibilities, and financial goals to Team Members.
- Assemble merchandise, perform janitorial duties, and assist customers with loading purchases.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of live animals, including sanitizing and maintaining holding tanks.
- Handle and care for live animals, including food, bedding, and habitat maintenance.
- Complete all documentation associated with job duties.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Previous retail leadership experience is required; supervisory experience preferred.
- Experience with pet/live animal knowledge is strongly preferred.
- Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.
- High school diploma or equivalent is preferred but not required; ability to read, write, and count accurately is essential.
- Ability to perform principle responsibilities of Team Members.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to resolve issues ethically with minimal conflict.
- Basic computer skills.
Working Conditions
- Favorable working environment, generally indoors with moderate noise.
- Work shifts vary (minimum 4 hours, may exceed 10 hours).
- Indoor floors and outdoor lots are hard surfaces (concrete, asphalt); lighting and temperature are adequate.
- Promote a safe and productive work environment; adhere to company safety training and guidelines.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently lift or reach merchandise overhead; stand, kneel, twist, crouch, squat, bend, stoop, and climb ladders.
- Move throughout the store for an entire shift; safely access all store areas (selling floor, side lot, stock area, register).
- Constantly operate store equipment (computer, cash register, point-of-sale system).
- Occasionally lift or reach merchandise overhead; move and transfer merchandise up to 50 pounds.
- Push and pull merchandise up to 2,000 pounds with material handling equipment (e.g., pallet jack, dolly, U-boat).
- Non-sedentary role requiring physical and mental stamina to move quickly and safely throughout the store.
