Assistant Store Manager, Petsense
About the Role
This position serves as the second in charge of operations to the Store Manager. Duties include providing leadership and direction to the store and salon team, ensuring a positive customer shopping experience, performing operational activities throughout the store, and giving appropriate direction to Team Members. The role is responsible for promoting a safe and productive work environment, training Team Members on policies and procedures, and driving sales and profitability.
Responsibilities
- Assist Store Manager in operations, including driving sales and profit, customer loyalty, planning, prioritization, and delegating daily tasks.
- Support hiring, staffing decisions, scheduling, training, and maintaining a productive work environment for Team Members and Salon Team Members.
- Act as store leader during the Store Manager’s absence (PTO, LOAs, etc.).
- Order live goods and store supplies; train and certify Team Leaders in the receiving process.
- Lead and coach store team members on operations to grow sales and profitability.
- Drive sales and profit through merchandising initiatives, expense control, profit/loss management, and shrink reduction.
- Execute assigned merchandising activities, including Plan-o-gram procedures (merchandising, sets, and resets).
- Perform opening/closing procedures, transport and make bank deposits, and ensure cash drawers and vault are reconciled daily.
- Operate cash register and supervise cash handling procedures.
- Assess store conditions, assign duties, and organize workflow using the daily planner.
- Perform recovery of merchandise, participate in freight processes, and execute price changes/markdowns.
- Resolve customer complaints/issues to ensure a positive experience.
- Adhere to loss prevention standards and respond to alarm calls as needed.
- Communicate job functions, responsibilities, and financial goals to Team Members.
- Assist Team Members with policy and procedure application.
- Assemble merchandise and perform janitorial duties.
- Assist customers with loading purchases.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of live animals, including sanitizing and maintaining holding tanks.
- Handle and care for live animals, including their food, bedding, and habitat.
- Complete all documentation associated with job duties.
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance; work varied hours, including nights, weekends, and overtime as needed.
Requirements
- Previous retail leadership experience is required.
- Experience with pet/live animal knowledge is strongly preferred.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.
- High school diploma or equivalent is preferred but not required.
- Must be able to read, write, and count accurately.
Skills
- Ability to perform principle responsibilities of Team Members.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to resolve issues ethically with minimal conflict.
- Basic computer skills.
- Pet/live animal, pet food, and pet product knowledge is strongly preferred.
Working Conditions
- Favorable working environment, generally indoors with moderate noise.
- Work shifts vary but are generally no less than 4 hours and may exceed 10 hours.
- Indoor floors and outdoor lots are typically hard surfaces (concrete, asphalt).
- Lighting and temperature are adequate.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to frequently lift or reach merchandise overhead.
- Ability to frequently stand, kneel, twist, crouch, squat, bend, stoop, and climb ladders.
- Ability to move throughout the store for an entire shift.
- Ability to safely access all areas of the store, including selling floor, side lot, stock area, and register area.
- Ability to constantly operate store equipment such as computers and cash registers.
- Ability to read, write, and count accurately to complete documentation.
- Ability to utilize strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to process information through the point-of-sale system.
- Ability to occasionally lift or reach merchandise overhead and move/transfer merchandise up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to push and pull merchandise up to 2,000 pounds with proper material handling equipment (e.g., pallet jack, dolly, or U-boat).
- Ability to travel as required in support of district needs and drive or operate a vehicle for business needs.
