About the role

Help establish statewide standards, support traffic engineering professionals, and drive innovation in traffic signal technology as Minnesota's next Assistant State Signal and Lighting Engineer! As Assistant State Signal and Lighting Engineer you will provide specialized guidance and develop policies and procedures for the design and operation of traffic signals and roadway lighting.

Responsibilities

  • Support MnDOT's Metro District and Greater Minnesota districts on signal operations and signal shared services.
  • Represent interests of non-Metro districts in signal design and operation decisions.
  • Provide technical support for training programs.
  • Manage the evaluation of new products and methods for traffic electrical designs and operation.
  • Act as a technical liaison for miscellaneous research and implementation projects.
  • Provide engineering assistance to MnDOT’s Connected and Automated Vehicle Program.

Requirements

  • Licensure as a professional engineer with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience and Interior Design (AELSLAGID). (If obtaining licensure through comity (reciprocity), a temporary permit from AELSLAGID must be provided to MnDOT HR prior to starting employment.)
  • Three years of experience as an Engineer Senior or equivalent that demonstrates the following:
    • Experience in, and high-level application of the principles and practices of traffic signal design and operation.
    • Knowledge and application of the National Electrical Code and general electrical principles.
    • Experience providing technical guidance and support to others.
    • Experience reviewing technical information and arriving at solutions to problems.
    • Supervisory experience sufficient to enforce and communicate MnDOT’s policies, personnel rules, and collective bargaining agreements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification by the Transportation Professional Certification Board Inc. as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE).
  • Field experience of traffic signal and lighting construction and resolving issues during construction.
  • Experience and application of roadway lighting design.
  • Knowledge and application of systems engineering processes.
  • Knowledge of Structural engineering.
