About the role

The Assistant Special Education Director/Building Administrator position at SouthWest Metro serves students in 11 member districts and 8 associate member districts across the southwestern Twin Cities metropolitan area. This role oversees student management systems, monitors attendance trends, and utilizes performance data to implement targeted behavioral and instructional interventions.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and follow district policies and best practices as they relate to student discipline and communication;
  • Supervise building: halls, lunch room, etc.;
  • Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of student management programs and systems;
  • Address transportation issues when needed;
  • Understand special education and individual education plans to help manage behaviors;
  • Maintain a safe and orderly learning environment with consistent monitoring of safety protocols;
  • Support the development and implementation of the school improvement plan;
  • Ensure the district's curriculum standards are delivered effectively;
  • Lead through the presence in classroom, building, and school functions;
  • Support compliance with district policies, procedures, and legal requirements related to curriculum, instruction, and professional development;
  • Work with administrators and teachers to develop and implement extended day and summer school programs;
  • Administer school programs consistent with school district goals and objectives;
  • Maintain a system for accurate and complete record-keeping and reporting for student activities, attendance and records as required by law;
  • Support the selection and adoption of instructional materials, textbooks, and media and software materials for the District.

Qualifications

  • A current special education teacher's license issued by the Minnesota Department of Education is required or the ability to obtain;
  • Enrolled and within one year of completing, or recently completed a Minnesota State Certification as a Principal and/or Special Education Director;
  • Motor Vehicle operator's license or ability to provide own transportation;
  • Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree from an accredited college or university;
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiating instruction based upon student learning styles;
  • Knowledge of K-12 school curriculum and concepts in multiple areas, including regular and special education, as well as elementary, middle and high school levels;
  • Knowledge of best practices in administration, program evaluation and staff supervision;
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans;
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education, special education, individuals with disabilities, etc.

Skills

  • Ability to apply contemporary curriculum frameworks and current national and state standards for student learning;
  • Ability to prepare oral or written communications, such as presentations, reports, memoranda, letters, grant proposals, curriculum documents, etc.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $90,000-$123,000 annually.

Schedule

This position is for 8 hours a day for 260 Contract Days starting July 1, 2026.
