Assistant Solicitor General

About the Role

The Assistant Solicitor General is a full-time role based in Albuquerque or Santa Fe, NM, with the ability to perform some work from home. This position focuses on drafting and reviewing appellate briefs, motions, and other legal filings in state and federal courts, as well as engaging in constitutional litigation, drafting Attorney General Opinions, and working on multistate comments, letters, amicus briefs, and litigation.

Responsibilities

• Draft and review appellate briefs, motions, and other legal filings in state and federal courts.
• Engage in constitutional litigation.
• Draft Attorney General Opinions.
• Work on multistate comments, letters, amicus briefs, and litigation.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
• Active membership (or eligibility for membership) in the New Mexico Bar.
• Strong legal research and writing abilities, including experience analyzing statutes, case law, and administrative regulations.
• Appellate advocacy skills such as brief drafting, motion practice, and oral argument in state and/or federal courts.
• Knowledge of constitutional law, administrative law, and civil and criminal procedure, with the ability to apply these in complex, high-impact matters.
• Collaborative skills for working with attorneys, support staff, and state agencies, including clear communication and professional judgment.
• Ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines, prioritize workload, and maintain attention to detail under time constraints.
• Commitment to public service, ethical practice, and advancing justice and safety for New Mexico communities.
• Prior appellate, clerkship, or public-sector experience is highly beneficial.
