Assistant Site Manager

About the role
This is a field/project-based position. The Assistant Site Manager will function as the overall Site Manager during off-rotation for the Site Manager and may, depending on project size, act as Site Manager for small projects (under $5 million).
Responsibilities
- Assist in developing scopes of work for review and approval.
- Assist in the development and management of the project schedule.
- Prepare estimates for self-performed work and assist in the complete project estimate.
- Oversee multiple divisions of work, including all aspects of means and methods of construction.
- Solicit prices from subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers; assist in selection of qualified bidders, negotiate final prices, and draft subcontracts and purchase orders.
- Assist in preparing cost-to-complete, monthly billings, status reports, and progress tracking.
- Review all drawings (shop, architectural, structural, etc.) when issued to the field and maintain a current set.
- Plan construction procedures based on specifications, starting and completion times, and staffing requirements.
- Implement procedures and assist in identifying staffing needs.
- Assist in locating, evaluating, and selecting potential subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers related to the General Conditions budget.
- Assist in pricing work, drafting changes and change orders, and ensuring customer satisfaction.
- Coordinate and manage on-site construction activities from pre-start-up to completion.
- Schedule work, including subcontractors; determine materials, equipment, and tools needed; secure supply sources.
- Set up and close out the construction site.
- Establish and maintain high safety and quality standards in accordance with company and industry standards.
- Serve as on-site safety representative when none is assigned; stop work, discipline team members, and remove subcontractors from the site in the absence of the Site Manager.
- Make on-the-spot decisions regarding safety and quality improvements without further approval.
- Resolve issues on behalf of management while considering financial impact related to potential out-of-scope items.
- Procure tools and materials to be delivered at specified times to conform to work schedules.
- Confer with and direct supervisory personnel and subcontractors to plan and execute work procedures, interpret specifications, and coordinate construction phases to prevent delays.
- Resolve workforce complaints and grievances.
- Prepare or review progress, materials, and cost reports; adjust work schedules as needed.
- Provide expert advice related to specific divisions of work.
- Meet with customers and refer all requested changes to the Site Manager and Project Manager for proper disposition.
- Work with city officials, OSHA, and inspectors throughout the project duration; ensure required inspections are conducted and documented per project specifications.
- Communicate, implement, and enforce Gray’s safety program on site.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school and a minimum of three years of construction experience, or a minimum of five years of related construction experience with increasing responsibility in lieu of a degree.
- Experience within the light/heavy industrial sector highly desired, specifically within the food and beverage market.
- Excellent leadership, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings, financial reports, and legal/contract documents.
- Strong people management skills.
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), tablets, and smartphones; MS Project and other scheduling software a plus.
- Strong work ethic, self-motivation, and ability to work in a team environment with a passion for collaboration and professional development.
- Ability to work independently and manage tasks without direct supervision.
- Willingness to travel, as projects are located throughout the United States and occasionally outside the U.S.; candidate may live anywhere in the USA but must travel to project sites per Gray’s travel policy.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands and arms, reach, talk, or hear.
- Regularly required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
- Must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 lbs, and occasionally lift or move up to 100 lbs.
- Specific vision abilities include accurate near and distant vision.
- Frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and outside weather conditions.
- Occasionally exposed to high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold and/or heat, risk of electrical shock, explosives, and vibration.
- Noise level is generally moderate to loud.
- Overtime may be required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Manage multiple subordinate team members, including training, planning, assigning, and directing work; rewarding and disciplining team members; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Indirectly manage subcontractors, consultants, and general laborers.
Pay
The wage range for this role is $100,000 to $130,000, taking into account skill sets, experience, training, certifications, and other business and organizational needs. Geographic differentials may apply based on the location of the position.
