Assistant Rodeo Coach

About the Role

This is a part-time staff position that reports directly to the Head Rodeo Coach. The Assistant Rodeo Coach supports the Head Men’s Rodeo Coach in coaching the highly competitive National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) team, including recruiting student athletes, coordinating practices and activity travel, and promoting events and activities.

Responsibilities

• Assists the Head Rodeo Coach in planning, directing, and coaching the intercollegiate rodeo program; develops student-athletes' fullest potential while maintaining regional competitiveness and ethical standards.
• Provides technical instruction and guidance to student-athletes during practices and competitions.
• Assists with oversight of student-athlete conduct, conflict resolution, and development of positive interpersonal relationships, including campus integration with other students and faculty.
• Supports the recruitment of student-athletes and helps them realize individual, team, and academic goals.
• Attends college, department, and division meetings as required.
• Promotes a positive atmosphere of teamwork and cooperation within the College and the community.
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with department staff, faculty, students, and the public.
• Assists with academic monitoring (class attendance, study halls, curfew checks) and maintains a clean facility.
• Performs all other duties as assigned by the Head Rodeo Coach and Director of Athletics.

Requirements

• Associate’s Degree preferred.
• Experience in rodeo, coaching, livestock care, or college athletics preferred.
• Experience in overseeing and operating livestock/equine facilities preferred.
• Recruiting experience preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured to drive college vehicles required.
• Strong personal work ethic and high level of personal integrity.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to relate to a diverse population and maintain composure in difficult situations.
• Ability to effectively supervise the work of others.

Work Environment

Work is primarily performed on rodeo grounds, in classrooms, or in an office setting under general supervision with appropriate climate controls. Travel, early morning, evening, and weekend work is required.

Physical Requirements

Essential functions of this position require:

• Lifting, manual dexterity, and large motor skills.
• Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Involves sitting only occasionally; walking and standing are required regularly. May require kneeling, crouching/squatting, crawling, climbing, stooping, turning/twisting, balancing, reaching, or handling.
• Mental application: Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability, and creative problem-solving skills.
