About the role

The assistant coach collaborates with head coaches and athletic administrative staff to plan practices focusing on teaching, encouraging, and developing student athlete skills and contest techniques. They also ensure athletes understand proper nutrition, personal health, and safe strength development. The position involves teaching physical education courses annually and managing various aspects of the athletics program.

Responsibilities

  • Teach and demonstrate competition techniques to team members individually and in groups.
  • Develop and recommend strategies, teach theoretical skills, and assign event roles.
  • Plan coaching and practice sessions according to head coach, conference, and university policies.
  • Teach one physical education course annually as part of student graduation criteria.
  • Substitute teach as needed when requested by the Head Coach and Director of PE.
  • Promote the athletics program through community events, camps, and public speaking.
  • Mentor and advise student athletes on personal health, strength training, and nutrition.
  • Recruit quality prospective student-athletes and ensure timely submission of their academic records for admissions.
  • Ensure compliance with all association, conference, and university rules by athletes and supporting staff.
  • Communicate regularly with the head coach, administration, and peers about program goals, status, and needs.
  • Schedule and manage team travel, including lodging, transportation, and meal arrangements within budgetary restrictions.
  • Serve as an event manager for home contests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned (e.g., horse care, driving to and from competitions with horses, ride and exercise horses).

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree is required, and a master's degree and collegiate playing experience is preferred.
  • Must be committed to a philosophy that emphasizes academic priorities for student-athletes as well as the importance of good citizenship in and outside of the ring.
  • Role models appropriate behavior and conduct to support the image and reputation of the athletics program.
  • Strong understanding of various coaching techniques and a willingness to learn new methods of instruction.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

Qualifications

  • Minimum qualifications include a bachelor's degree and a master's degree and collegiate playing experience preferred.
