Assistant Resident Engineer

About the role

The ideal candidate will focus on delivering infrastructure projects for a wide variety of clients throughout northeast Illinois, with a main focus on working within the City of Chicago. This position reports to the Construction Department Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, reviews, and assigns work of construction field office personnel.
  • Reviews project activities with client and contractor's field supervisor to resolve disputes and other project issues.
  • Reads and interprets complex contract plans and specifications.
  • Reads and interprets construction contract language.
  • Maintains progress against approved schedules.
  • Reviews/coordinates and prepares responses to project correspondence, RFIs and technical submittals.
  • Proactively manages construction changes and claims and works with client to resolve.
  • Leads construction meetings with clients and contractors.
  • Affords assistance to client and Project Manager with stakeholder coordination.
  • Works with client and contractor to manage construction budget and schedule.
  • Affords assistance to Project Manager with management of project budget, schedule and staffing.
  • Affords assistance to Project Manager to maintain client communications and relationships.
  • Mentors staff on CE+I responsibilities and tasks.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in Transportation and Infrastructure CE&I work on highway, bridge or transit projects.
  • 5+ years working as an Assistant Resident Engineer on projects with increasing size and complexity.
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture or related field.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • IDOT Documentation of Contract Quantities certification is required.
  • Experience delivering projects within the City of Chicago is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to direct and supervise staff engineers and technicians.
  • Must have and maintain a good driving record and have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Possess physical mobility and stamina for construction site visits.
  • Willingness to work weekends, nights, and swing shifts as required on assigned projects.

Pay

The salary range for this role is $120,000 to $145,000. Actual compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to the candidate's skill set, experience, certifications, and geographic location. Compensation may vary by location due to differences in the cost of labor.

Schedule

Actual hours may vary based on project needs and client requirements.
