Job Description

Farmingdale State College is seeking a strategic, data-informed leader to serve as Assistant Provost for Institutional Research and Effectiveness. In this role, the Assistant Provost serves as the College's senior executive authority and designated institutional officer for institutional research, planning, assessment, and effectiveness. Reporting to the Senior Vice President and Provost, the Assistant Provost acts on behalf of the Provost in their absence on matters related to the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness, ensuring continuity of leadership and decision-making.

Strategic Leadership and Institutional Authority

Develops and implements, with principal responsibility, a college wide institutional research, planning, and effectiveness strategy aligned with College and SUNY priorities. Exercises independent judgment in identifying institutional performance risks, opportunities, and trends, and makes recommendations that directly inform and shape executive level decisions and policy direction. Serves as a standing advisor to the Provost and senior leadership, providing strategic analysis that shapes institutional priorities and resource allocation.

Institutional Data Oversight, Compliance, and Risk Management

Exercises institutional authority and accountability for enterprise data oversight, methodologies, stewardship standards, and ethical use. Establishes and enforces policies and procedures governing institutional data to mitigate compliance, accreditation, and reputational risk. Certifies the accuracy and completeness of institutional data submitted to SUNY, state and federal agencies, accreditation bodies, and external entities.

Reporting, Accreditation, and External Accountability

Serves as the institutional executive authority for mandatory and high stakes reporting, including IPEDS, SUNY reporting, accreditation self studies, rankings, and external surveys. Directs and approves institutional assessment and accreditation reporting, ensuring alignment with regulatory, accreditation, and strategic requirements. Represents the College in reviews, audits, and inquiries related to institutional data and performance.

Institutional Research, Planning, and Policy Development

Directs and prioritizes applied research, evaluation, enrollment modeling, and scenario analyses to support strategic, academic, and financial planning. Provides executive level policy analysis, including impact assessments related to enrollment, academic programs, resource allocation, and institutional effectiveness. Determines research agendas and analytical priorities in response to emerging institutional needs.

Administrative, Supervisory, and Fiscal Authority

Has full managerial responsibility for the Office of Institutional Research & Effectiveness, including organizational structure, operational priorities, workflow design, and performance management. Supervises professional and support staff, including hiring recommendations, performance evaluations, workload assignments, and corrective action. Has direct responsibility for the Office's operating budget, including resource planning, expenditure oversight, and fiscal accountability.

Institutional Representation and Confidential Role

Serves as the College's official representative to SUNY System Administration, SUNY AIRPO, accreditation bodies, and professional organizations on matters related to institutional research and effectiveness. Participates in confidential executive discussions involving strategic planning, institutional risk, and policy development.

Job Requirements

  • Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., statistics, data science, education research).
  • Five (5) years of full-time experience in institutional research, higher education analytics, or closely related field.
  • Two (2) years of full-time experience directly managing analysts, programmers, or similar staff.
  • Strong analytical and data management skills, with proficiency in statistical software and database management.
  • Knowledge of higher education policies, accreditation processes, and compliance regulations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in designing and administering surveys and other assessments.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively across academic and administrative units.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and decision-making skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience with IPEDS reporting.
  • Experience with data governance.
  • Experience designing data dashboards.
  • Deep knowledge of Banner or similar student information systems.
  • Professional activity in institutional research or assessment, including presentations, publications, or professional service.

  • This is a full-time M/C position.
