About the role

The Assistant Project Manager (APM) supports the Project Manager (PM) and site leadership team in the safe, high-quality, and efficient execution of utility-scale solar, BESS, and HV construction projects. The APM assists with project administration, scheduling, forecasting, procurement, subcontract management, financial controls, document management, and client communication.

Responsibilities

  • Pre-Mobilization/LNTP Phase Lead: LNTP and pre-mobilization setup by managing documentation, permits, contracts, scopes, and early procurement while supporting budget development and overall execution planning.
  • Support the Project Manager through client coordination, meeting preparation, scope and drawing review, and ensuring project requirements, estimates, and planning documents are accurate and aligned.
  • Manage subcontracting and procurement workflows by preparing requisitions, supporting PO creation, validating quantities against BOMs, and ensuring alignment with scopes, budgets, and schedule requirements.
  • Draft and review subcontract agreements, lead pre-task planning meetings, and coordinate first-article build approvals to ensure clarity, safety, quality, and proper construction sequencing.
  • Support quality and compliance efforts by maintaining required documentation and assisting with Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) reporting, domestic content verification, and labor-related requirements.
  • Prepare agendas, gather field data, compile progress updates, and support client-facing presentations and project reporting across schedule, cost, quality, and safety metrics.
  • Cook up three-week look-ahead schedules, participate in weekly cost reviews, and work with Construction and Trade Superintendents to align labor, materials, subcontractors, and critical path activities.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors by tracking performance, resolving field issues, and reviewing invoices for accuracy, percent-complete validation, and proper documentation.
  • Oversee Project Engineer in participation of detailed page turn reviews of engineering drawings to verify consistency, identify constructability issues, and coordinate with Engineering and field teams on required clarifications.
  • Ensure Project Engineer is processing, tracking, and logging all submittals and transmittals between engineering, vendors, subcontractors, and clients, ensuring timely review cycles and up-to-date document control.
  • Support project financial controls by forecasting cost flows, preparing WIP reports, updating percent-complete data, and identifying variances for leadership review.
  • Aid in change management and contractual communication by gathering backup for change orders, documenting impacts, and drafting formal project notices.
  • Contribute to overall schedule management by gathering field progress data, identifying risks, and helping update the project schedule with the PM, CM, and scheduler.
  • Perform variable cost calculations by analyzing labor hours, equipment usage, and production rates to support billing, forecasting, and cost control efforts.
  • Review and validate invoices for variable-cost work items, ensuring alignment with field progress, contract terms, and supporting documentation before approval.

Qualifications

  • 4–7+ years of construction experience; utility-scale solar, BESS, HV, industrial, commercial construction or heavy civil experience preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field (preferred but not required with equivalent experience).
  • Experience with self-perform construction environments strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with project management and construction software (P6, Procore, Bluebeam, Vista/CMiC, MS Office, etc.).
  • Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work on-site 100% (temporary relocation to project community required).

Physical Requirements

  • Must comply with client safety requirements (e.g., clean-shaven, long sleeves, steel-toe boots).
  • Must pass a physical exam if required.
  • Able to:
    • Climb and maintain balance on ladders, scaffolding, and stairways.
    • Stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and work at heights or in confined spaces (e.g., towers, vessels, excavations).
    • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. (Use assistance for heavier loads).
    • Stand or walk for extended periods on uneven surfaces (dirt, concrete, asphalt, mud, gravel).
    • Must be able to wear a respirator and other PPE when required.

WORK LOCATION

Industrial construction sites and/or fabrication shops.

  • Predominantly outdoor work
  • Exposure to: Extreme heat or cold, Humidity, Rain, and other weather conditions, Loud noise from tools and machinery, Potential chemical exposure
