About the Role

MWH is seeking an Assistant Project Manager - Commercial to support the team in controls, contracts, coordination, and construction of critical water/wastewater treatment plants and other advanced water infrastructure projects for both municipal and industrial clients (including advanced technology sector clients) based in the Portland, OR or Seattle, WA metropolitan areas. Projects may use integrated project delivery methods such as CMAR, CMGC/GCCM, Design-Build, or traditional Design-Bid-Build, ranging in size from $20M to $1.5B. This position focuses on the commercial aspects of projects, including contracts, project controls, risk, legal, and change management.

The Assistant Project Manager – Commercial ensures accurate project finance reporting, compliance of contracts and change orders with company standards and contract documents, proper allocation and tracking of risk, and engagement of corporate legal when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Contracts: Ensure project procedures comply with Prime Contract and Subcontracts/Purchase Agreements. Understand terms and conditions flow-down and assess residual risk from buyout. Manage compliance with contract documents and company standard operating procedures.
  • Change Management: Coordinate with Project Managers and Superintendents to review and evaluate proposed change orders against contract documents and assess cost estimate validity. Manage change order requests/proposals for changed/extra work and ensure project finance reporting reflects change and risk.
  • Project Correspondence: Coordinate with the Project Engineering Team and Trade Package Managers to draft letters and official correspondence to Subcontractors, Suppliers, and Owners.
  • Governance: Ensure project decisions comply with the Management Authority Matrix and lead in obtaining necessary approvals before actions are taken.
  • Risk Management: Lead meetings to review the project risk log and manage it for monthly reporting to the Project Management Dashboard. Ensure all items are tracked in the risk log or CMiC.
  • Project Controls: Ensure project controls are implemented, trained, and executed according to company policies. Review project budgets, cash flow projections, and forecasts. Work with the project team to analyze, assess, and implement claims prevention and mitigation policies.
  • Legal: Conduct analyses of project issues and engage corporate legal as dictated by the Management Authority Matrix or when necessary to mitigate risk.
  • Follow company health and safety guidelines and policies to ensure personal and team safety.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science or higher university degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field. An equivalent combination of experience, skills, and training may be substituted.
  • 4+ years of experience in project engineering, site superintendent, or trade package management specifically in heavy civil, structural, or buildings construction.
  • 3+ years of experience as an assistant project manager or equivalent role on a heavy civil, structural, or buildings construction project.
  • 3+ years of experience managing profit/loss reporting on a construction project.
  • Familiarity with preparing contract scoping documents, reading contract drawings and specifications, and basic construction principles and practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Heavy civil, structural, or buildings construction experience with water-retaining structures, public water/wastewater infrastructure, or similar industries.
  • On-site construction project engineering/management experience.
  • Contracts, risk, or finance experience with a construction company.
  • Experience negotiating and executing subcontract/purchase agreements, change orders, and client change orders.
  • Hands-on knowledge of CMiC and Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC).

Pay

The anticipated salary for this position is $130,000 - $150,000 per year, based on experience.
