Assistant Project Manager
Job Description
The Assistant Project Manager (APM) supports the delivery of capital projects across transmission, distribution, and grid modernization portfolios. This role focuses on project coordination, governance adherence, reporting, and enabling Project Managers (PMs) to execute safely, on schedule, and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
- Support PMs in day-to-day management of capital projects (scope, schedule, cost)
- Track deliverables, action items, and key milestones across multiple projects
- Coordinate with engineering, construction, environmental, and permitting teams
- Schedule & Cost Management
- Maintain and update project schedules (Primavera P6 / MS Project)
- Track budgets, forecasts, and variances; support cost controls and change management
- Aid in invoice review and contractor progress validation
- Governance & Stage Gate Support
- Support stage gate process (initiation through closeout)
- Prepare gate review materials, business cases, and supporting documentation
- Ensure compliance with internal governance and regulatory requirements
- Reporting & PMO Alignment
- Develop weekly/monthly status reports, dashboards, and KPI tracking
- Maintain project documentation in alignment with PMO standards
- Support portfolio-level reporting and executive updates
- Risk & Issue Management
- Track risks, issues, and mitigation plans
- Escalate critical items to PMs and leadership as needed
- Stakeholder Coordination
- Interface with internal stakeholders and external partners (contractors, agencies)
- Support meeting coordination, agendas, and documentation of decisions/actions
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or related field
- 2–5 years of experience supporting infrastructure, utility, or capital projects
- Experience in electric T&D, substation, or grid modernization projects preferred
- Scheduling tools (Primavera P6, MS Project)
- Cost tracking and financial reporting
- Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and project management systems
- Strong organizational and coordination skills
- Attention to detail with ability to manage multiple priorities
- Effective communication across technical and non-technical teams
- Understanding of utility project lifecycle and regulatory environment
- Supporting PMO functions or portfolio reporting
- Familiarity with utility standards, safety practices, and permitting processes
- CAPM or PMP (or working toward certification)
- On-time delivery of assigned tasks and milestones
- Accuracy and timeliness of reporting and documentation
- Adherence to governance and stage gate requirements
- Effective support to PMs resulting in improved project performance

Salary Range: $103,500.00 - $181,100.00
